Team Manitoba (photo: Michael Burns, Curling Canada) have looked solid all week, posting a 7-1 record through round robin to secure first place in pool A. Their only loss came Tuesday against British Columbia's Catlin Schnieder. The final game of pool A round robin action saw a battle of the two top seeds in Carruthers and Alberta's Bottcher Thursday night. It was a tight battle the whole way through, but a big deuce in the ninth end and steals in the seventh and tenth ends secured Carruthers the win and top seed. Team Carruthers, with Connor Njegovan, Derek Samagalski, Reid Carruthers joined together in the 2022-23 season, although Samagalski and Carruthers have been teammates since 2014. Brad Jacobs came onto the team last year right before the 2023 Brier. Jacobs came out of a short lived retirement from curling to play a supporting role at third, with Carruthers skipping. However, the team has made a few adjustments and have been on a roll since switching Jacobs back to skipping. Team Carruthers started this season strong, winning the Pointsbet Invitational in Oakville, Ontario for the second year in a row. They have since competed in four grand slams, missing the playoffs in two and finishing as quarter finalists in the other two. Carruthers has had more success recently however, finishing as finalists in the 2024 Astec Safety Challenge and then winning the highly competitive Manitoba Men's Provincial Championship. Team Manitoba (A1) will face team Canada's Brad Gushue (B2) in the page playoff seeding games. The other matchup will see Alberta's Bottcher (A2) take on Saskatchewan's McEwen (B1). The winners of these games will face off in the 1v2 page playoff Saturday evening while the losers move into an elimination game against the third place seeds from each pool. |
