The six teams have been confirmed for the championship round beginning Friday. By: Cameron Sallaj In Thursday evenings final round robin draw, Alberta's Brendan Bottcher and Manitoba's Matt Dunstone completed the playoff picture for the 2024 Montana's Brier, joining Manitoba (Carruthers), Saskatchewan (McEwen), Team Canada (Gushue) and the Northwest Territories (Koe) who all previously qualified. The Bottcher rink from Calgary, including Marc Kennedy, Brett Gallant and Ben Hebert only needed the draw to the button to secure their spot to the playoff round. Already sitting 6-1, the team finished with the best draw shot in the entire event, earning them their spot regardless of how their game went against Manitoba's Reid Carruthers. In the back-and-forth contest, Carruthers turned the tide in the game with a key steal in the seventh. The Manitoba rink then got two in the ninth for a two-point lead coming home, eventually running Team Bottcher out of stones for a 6-3 win. Matt Dunstone and his Manitoba team's night was a bit shorter, however, as the team secured a 12-4 win over Newfoundland and Labrador's Andrew Symonds in just eight ends. The win guaranteed the third playoff spot for Dunstone, B. J. Neufeld, Colton Lott and Ryan Harnden and eliminated Northern Ontario's Trevor Bonot who was the only other team still alive. With a 7-1 record, Manitoba's Carruthers rink scored the top spot out of Pool A. Brendan Bottcher and Matt Dunstone both finished with 6-2 records but the Alberta side earned second place due to their head-to-head victory. In the rest of the pool, Northern Ontario's Trevor Bonot finished with a 5-3 record after falling in an extra end to the Yukon's Thomas Scoffin (2-6; Whitehorse) Thursday night. British Columbia's Catlin Schneider trailed closely behind at 4-4. Ontario's Scott Howard also suffered defeat in their final round robin game, giving up a steal of two to New Brunswick's James Grattan (1-7; Oromocto) in the final end. They ended at 3-5 while Newfoundland and Labrador (2-6), Yukon and NB rounded out Pool A. The stage is now set for the page seeding games Friday. Manitoba's Carruthers (A1) will cross over and play Team Canada (B2) while Saskatchewan (B1) meet Alberta's Bottcher (A2) in the page 1 vs 2 qualifiers at 1:00 PM Central Time. The winners will advance to the playoff round while the losers drop into the 3 vs 4 qualifiers against Manitoba's Dunstone (A3) and the Northwest Territories (B3) at 7:00 PM. |
