Schneider tops Carruthers for third straight win in hometown Brier

Following two straight losses to open the 2024 Montana's Brier, Team British Columbia (Photo: Curling Canada) are now 3-2 headed into the back half of the week.

In Pool B action Tuesday morning, Manitoba's Reid Carruthers faced British Columbia's Catlin Schneider. The Manitoba champions, sitting 3-0 heading into the game, were looking to remain as the sole undefeated team while the BC champs from Victoria looked to build on their winning momentum from the previous two games.

Things got off to a good start for the Victoria based rink of Schneider, Jason Ginter, Sterling Middleton and Alex Horvath as they were able to steal one in the opening end. Their lead didn't last long, however, as Manitoba fourth rock thrower Brad Jacobs executed a takeout in the second end to count three points and lift his team ahead 3-1. BC skip Catlin Schneider knotted the score at three all with a draw to the rings in the third.

In four, a heavy freeze by BC opened the door for Brad Jacobs to play a soft weight hit to count four points. Jacobs was able to move the red stone, but only far enough to count two points. Manitoba then forced British Columbia to just one in the fifth, taking a 5-4 lead into the break.

Coming back in the sixth, Jacobs had another chance for big points with a runback double takeout for three. His stone overcurled, however, missing the two BC stones and allowing the Schneider rink to take the lead for the first time since the opening end. Manitoba would regain the lead in the next end with two of their own, going up 7-6 after seven.

The British Columbia champs scored the fourth deuce of the game with a draw for two in the eighth to swing the pendulum back in their favor. Then in nine, they managed to force Manitoba to a single for the first time in the game. This left the score tied once again at eight all with BC holding the all-important last rock headed to ten.

Facing two on his last, Catlin Schneider ensured the single point with a draw to the four-foot, defeating Manitoba 9-8 and improving his teams record to 3-2.

The Schneider rink had a tough start to their 2024 title campaign in Regina, dropping two straight games to Ontario's Scott Howard and Manitoba's Matt Dunstone. Since then, the team have rallied off wins over Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick and now Manitoba (Carruthers) to sit 3-2 in the standings. In their next game, the team will face another tough test, however, going up against pool leaders Northern Ontario in Tuesday night action.

Catlin Schneider currently resides twenty minutes outside Regina and is the import player on the BC rink that was previously led by Jacques Gauthier. Schneider says he's not too focused on the colors he's now wearing but rather the support in what is his hometown Brier.

"I'm not too focused on the colors; (I'm) just excited to be out there with lots of friends and family around," said Schneider after his 6-3 victory against New Brunswick on Monday. "It's been really fun and exciting so far."

For Carruthers, this is their first and only loss so far in the tournament as they started with three straight wins. The team from the Granite Curling Club in Winnipeg will face New Brunswick in Draw 12 followed by Newfoundland and Labrador, the Yukon and Alberta (Bottcher) to conclude the round robin.

Draw 10 results:
Manitoba (Dunstone) 9-6 New Brunswick (Grattan)
Newfoundland and Labrador (Symonds) 6-5 Yukon (Scoffin)
Ontario (Howard) 6-10 Northern Ontario (Bonot)
British Columbia (Schneider) 9-8 Manitoba (Carruthers)

With their victory over Ontario, Northern Ontario's Trevor Bonot move to sole possession of first place in Pool A with a 4-1 record. Tied for second place is Manitoba (Carruthers), Alberta (Bottcher) and Manitoba (Dunstone) all at 3-1 while British Columbia trail closely behind at 3-2.

Action from the 2024 Montana's Brier continues Tuesday at 2:00 PM Central Time. In the featured game, Prince Edward Island's Tyler Smith takes on Quebec's Julien Tremblay with both teams making to look strides towards the playoff picture.
