By: Dylan Chenier Winnipeg's Kristy Watling is one win away from securing a spot in the playoffs at this weekend's S3 Group Curling Stadium Series event in Swift Current. This morning, the Manitoba rink is set to take on Japan's Sayaka Yoshimura in a B-Side qualifier at the Swift Current Curling Club. So far this weekend, Watling's team has enjoyed their share of successes, with the rink currently sporting a record of 2-1. The squad opened the event with two straight wins on the A-Side, getting by Saskatchewan's Jessica Mitchell 5-4, before defeating Team Sasaki from Japan 7-4 on Friday evening. Team Watling- with third Hailey McFarlane, second Emilie Rafnson, and lead Sarah Pyke- then went on to face South Korea's Seungyoun Ha in an A-Side final on Saturday afternoon. Despite a strong start, with the team from Manitoba picking up a steal of two in the first end, Ha's rink would dominate the game, scoring two points in the second end, and then stealing five more throughout the draw. With their 7-2 loss against Team Ha now in the books, Watling drops to the B-Side of the event, where her team will face off against Team Yoshimura this morning at 9:00 AM MT, with another playoff berth on the line. The Japanese squad's journey to this morning's B-Side finals saw the rink drop their first game of the weekend on Friday, before securing two consecutive wins, including a 7-3 victory over Saskatoon's Amelie Blais on Saturday night. Sunday morning's B-Side qualifier will be broadcast live through SaskTel Curling Stadium Swift Current; the game will also be the featured draw on CBC Sports. This week in Swift Current, Team Watling is looking to secure their first event win of the season. The rink's best result so far was a third-place finish at the Mother Club Fall Curling Classic last month in Winnipeg. The young team will be hoping for some strong performances this fall and winter, as preparations ramp up for the 2023 Manitoba Provincial Scotties. At last year's provincial championship, Watling's squad finished as the runner's up, meaning they have some unfinished business this season as they look to qualify for their first-ever national Scotties Tournament of Hearts. So far, the team is putting in the work necessary to get their game where they want it to be. After three events so far this year, Team Watling sits in 34th place on the World Curling Federation's year-to-date rankings, with 26.3 points. For now, however, the rink from Winnipeg will focus on the task at hand: securing a playoff spot in Swift Current. The team will have two chances to book their place in the quarterfinals, but they will likely be looking to avoid a C-Side final if possible, as they aim to defeat Japan's Team Yoshimura in this morning's B-Side qualifier. Sunday morning's draw between Team Watling and Team Yoshimura is set for 9:00 AM MT inside the Swift Current Curling Club.
