Saskatoon's Team Kleiter (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) will be looking for their first event win of the season this weekend, at the S3 Group Curling Stadium Series event hosted by Sasktel Curling Stadium Swift Current. By: Dylan Chenier This weekend, 16 of the best men's curling teams will take to the ice at the Swift Current Curling Club for the 2022 S3 Group Curling Stadium Series: Swift Current event. The tournament promises to be an exciting one, pitting some recognizable Canadian rinks against a field of tough international opponents. The action gets underway on Friday afternoon, with four men's draws set to hit the ice at 12:30 PM MT. The opening draw will see South Korea's ByeongJin Jeong take on Saskatoon's Rylan Kleiter in a featured matchup that will be broadcast live through CBC Sports, in partnership with Sasktel Curling Stadium Swift Current. Team Jeong arrives in Swift Current this weekend as the 23rd-ranked rink in the world, according to the World Curling Federation's year-to-date men's team rankings. The squad, based out of Seoul, has won one event so far this season after they defeated Japan's Yusuke Morzumi in the final of the Hokkaido Bank Curling Classic this past August. Meanwhile, Team Kleiter is still looking for its first win of the season. At their most recent competition- the ATB Okotoks Classic- the Saskatchewan rink would drop their opening contest before winning three straight games to advance as a B-Side qualifier. In the quarterfinals, Kleiter would drop a rather lopsided contest to team Colton Flasch, ultimately finishing the event in fifth place. Friday afternoon's matchup between Jeong and Kleiter marks the first-ever contest between the two rinks; Klieter's team will be looking to draw on the home-ice advantage in search of an opening victory. Other noteworthy teams taking to the ice this weekend in Swift Current include Japan's Riku Yanagisawa, Regina's Kelly Knapp, and Saskatoon's Steve Laycock. All sixteen rinks will be hoping for a strong showing this weekend, as they compete for a share of the $8,000 purse, with the winning team set to take home $2,300. This weekend's S3 Group Curling Stadium Series event features a triple-knockout format, with eight teams advancing to the playoffs, which kick-off with the quarterfinals on Monday morning at 8:00 AM MT. Fans can watch the action all weekend long on Curling Zone's YouTube page, with Sasktel Curling Stadium Swift Current providing live coverage of every sheet during every draw. Select contests will also be carried by CBC Sports. |
