Kelly upends Jones for Toronto Tankard playoff spot

Late steals help New Brunswick's Andrea Kelly (Photo: Curling Canada) defeat Team Jones for a spot in the Stu Sells Toronto Tankard playoff round.

Three women's B qualifier games took place in Draw 16 at the High Park Club in Toronto, Ontario. One of them featured a rematch from last weekend's PointsBet Invitational with Fredericton, New Brunswick's Andrea Kelly rink taking on the Jennifer Jones rink out of Winnipeg. As Jones is in Ottawa for the Hardline Open mixed doubles event, the team is back to its lineup from last season with Mackenzie Zacharias leading the charge.

It was the Jones rink that got on the board first with a single point in the second end following an opening blank. Team Kelly then followed suit with a blank in the third and single of their own in the fourth end to tie the score.

In the fifth end, Mackenzie Zacharias had an opportunity for the first deuce of the game with a draw to the four-foot, but her stone didn't curl enough, resulting in only one. Andrea Kelly then tied the score once again with a draw in the sixth end to level things at two apiece with only two ends remaining.

The seventh end proved to be the turning point in the match. Sitting two, Kelly guarded on her last rock to force Zacharias to a draw for her single point. She would come up well short, however, gifting the reigning Scotties bronze medalists a steal of two and their first lead of the game.

In the eighth, the New Brunswick rink continued their strong play, leaving Mackenzie Zacharias only a runback double takeout for the win. Her stone didn't curl enough, and Team Kelly took another steal of two, making the final score 6-2.

Team Kelly opened the Toronto Tankard with a 9-6 win over Ontario's Cathy Auld before losing to British Columbia's Clancy Grandy 8-3. This dropped them into the B Event where they won over Danielle Inglis (Whitby, ON) 6-5 and then beat Jones to qualify for the playoffs.

The Stu Sells Toronto Tankard is Team Kelly's second event of the 2022-23 season. The team was in Fredericton for the PointsBet Invitational but dropped their opening game to the Jones rink 9-5. This week in Toronto, they were able to take their revenge by beating Team Jones, dropping the Manitoba team into the C Event. The team is scheduled to compete in the HearingLife Tour Challenge Tier 2 Grand Slam event set to run October 18 to 23 in Grande Prairie, Alberta.

In other women's B qualifier matches, South Korea's Kim Eun-jung made a hit-and-stick in the eighth end to bounce Vancouver's Clancy Grandy 6-4 while Waterloo's Hailey Armstrong took down Mississauga's Breanna Rozon 5-3. Both Armstrong and Kim are now also qualified for the playoffs while Grandy and Rozon drop into the C Event finals with Team Jones.

In men's action, Yves Stocker (Zug, SUI) stayed alive by shutting out Mike Fournier (Toronto, ON) 8-0 while Mark Kean (Ottawa, ON) eliminated Owen Purcell (Halifax, NS) in a 7-5 decision.
