Team Lott Advances to DEKALB Quarterfinals

Update: The article has been revised from its first edition which initially referred to Team Lott as "Team Simmons." Pat Simmons has departed the team following the 2021 Pre-Trials. Colton Lott is now skipping with Emerson Klimpke coming on-board at lead.

Winnipeg's Team Lott (Picture: Anil Mungal) has advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2021 DEKALB SuperSpiel in Morris, Manitoba, after defeating Edmonton's Team Sturmay 7-4 in an A-Side quarterfinal on Saturday evening.

Saturday's draw at the Morris Curling Club opened with Team Sturmay stealing two in the first end. However, Lott answered right back in the second end, scoring three.

Team Lott, with third Tanner Lott, second Kyle Doering, and lead Emerson Klimpke would extend their lead in the third end by stealing one.

Sturmay's rink was unable to translate hammer into a multiple-point end in the fourth, settling for just one, giving Lott a 4-3 lead at the break.

In the fifth end, Lott would open things up even more by scoring three, taking a 7-3 lead with three ends remaining.

Team Sturmay was once again forced to a single in the sixth end, giving hammer back to Lott who led by three with just two ends to go.

Recognizing that a comeback was highly unlikely, Team Sturmay would opt for handshakes in the seventh end, giving Lott the win 7-4.

With their victory, Team Lott has officially booked a spot in the playoffs, joining Team Hartung who earned their quarterfinal birth after beating Team Horgan on Saturday afternoon.

The win also marks Colton Lott's second consecutive victory Karsten Sturmay, after defeating the team 10-1 as part of Pat Simmons' rink at the 2021 Pre-Trials in Liverpool, Nova Scotia.

Team Sturmay's Saturday loss moves them to the B-Side of the triple knockout format, where they will take on Jordan McDonald's Winnipeg-based rink in a third-round matchup on Sunday morning.

In other action during Saturday evening's Draw 10, Ryan Wiebe (MB) defeated Daniel Casper's Chaska, MN rink 7-2 in a B-Side second-round matchup, while Jason Gunnlaugson (MB) defeated Winnipeg's Sean Grassie 9-7. Meanwhile, in a C-Side first-round draw, Andrin Schnider (SUI) downed Winnipeg's Zachary Wasylik 6-4.

With their spot in the quarterfinals solidified, Team Lott will enjoy an off day in Morris, before the playoffs begin Monday morning. Sunday will act as moving day at the SuperSpiel, with teams in the B and C-Side competing over the remaining quarterfinals positions.

The 2021 DEKALB SuperSpiel runs through Monday at the Morris Curling Club in Morris, Manitoba, with the championship final set for Monday at 7:00 PM CT
