 Glenn Howard (photo: Anil Mungal) finished 3-1 in pool play, will face Ottawa's Jordan McNamara in Sunday's quarterfinals. After losing their opening game 5-3 to Mark Kean (Woodstock, Ont), Howard strung together wins over Yannick Martel (Saguenay, Que.) and Sam Mooibroek (Kitchener, Ont.) to set up the last draw against Vincent Roberge (Quebec, Que.). Howard with son Scott at third, David Mathers at second and Tim March at lead continue to be among the region's best teams. Roberge and Howard traded deuces, with Roberge stopping Howard for a single in the fourth end and a 4-3 lead with hammer at the break. After Howard got the force back, they score three points in the sixth end to take their first lead of the game, one they would not relinquish. Kean and Pat Ferris (Grimsby, Ont.) advanced directly to the semifinals, while Toronto's Rob Ainsley will face Tanner Horgan skipping Kingston's Team Beuk. Howard's early-season schedule focuses on the Canadian Olympic Trials Direct Entry spiel held September 22-26th at the RA Centre in Ottawa. Howard is joined by Matt Dunstone (Regina), Colton Flasch (Saskatoon), Jason Gunnlaugson (Winnipeg) and Mike McEwen (Winnipeg) in a battle for two berths directly into the Canadian Olympic Trials in November. The three teams who fail to advance will play in the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials held October 26 to 31 at the Queens Place Emera Centre in Liverpool, Nova Scotia. In a short tournament, anything can happen, and with Howard focused on that one last chance at the Olympic dream, that experience gives Glenn a seat at the table. Last season was a quiet regeneration for Howard. Playing during the shortened pandemic season saw Howard go undefeated in Stu Sells Oakville Tankard, then reached the finals in their subsequent three events, finishing with a 20-5 record on Tour and a notable runner-up finish in Penticton at the Ashley Home Store Classic. An injury forced Howard out of the Brier, with Wayne Middaugh returning to the ice to fill in, though Howard seems back on track and ready to take on the challenge of another season on the ice in a game he truly loves to play. |
