Calvert Claims Spot in Final
![]() Manitoba's Braden Calvert defeated Ontario's Scott Howard to claim their spot in Friday evening's best two-of-three final. By Connor Simms, The team from Winnipeg, Manitoba, with Braden Calvert skipping with Corey Chambers at third, Kyle Kurz and Brendan Bilawka on the front end, shift their focus to the final of the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. Calvert is not fully known on the World Curling Tour, as they mainly compete locally in Manitoba. They are on an impressive run this week at the Pre-Trials. They were 4-2 heading into their final round robin game. In their opening game, Calvert lost 7-2 to Jean-Michel Menard (Amos, QC), then responded with a 9-5 win over Mark Kean (Woodstock, ON). Calvert won 8-4 against Jordon McDonald (Winnipeg, MB). Calvert went on to lose 6-5 against Owen Purcell (Halifax, NS). Calvert responded with a 12-9 win over Jayden King (London, ON). Calvert won 6-4 against Sam Mooibroek (Whitby, ON). This brought an important match with Ontario's Scott Howard with playoff spots on the line. Howard won the opening game, drawing to the button for the hammer. Howard scored 1 in the first end, and Calvert responded in the second end, scoring 2. Howard scored a single in the third end, and Calvert responded in the fourth end, scoring 3. Howard scored 2 in the fifth end, then forced Calvert to a single in the sixth end. Then added a steal in the seventh end, Howard responded in the eighth end, scoring 2. After a blank end, Calvert scored a single in the tenth end. With this win, the only team that could tie them in the standings would be McDonald, but due to Calvert's round robin win over them, they have clinched first place and a direct bye to the final. The final for this event is a best two-of-three format. Clavert awaits the outcome tonight to see who will face off in the semi-final on Friday morning. The finals begin on Friday night a 7:30 pm Atlantic Time, with game 2 on Saturday at 2:00 pm Atlantic Time. Watch sheets B, C, and D games live on the Curling Canada YouTube page.
