By Connor Simms, Serena Gray-Withers/Victor Pietrangelo dominated the field at the U25 NextGen Classic in their first event as a team. Pietrangelo is experienced in the mixed doubles discipline. He was a part of the mixed doubles team with Jessica Zheng that was at the 2025 Mixed Doubles Curling Trials. Zheng ultimately decided to step away from curling to focus on her career/schooling. This opened the opportunity for the young 4-person skip out of Alberta, Serena Gray-Withers, to join forces with Pietrangelo. Gray-Withers most recently won the women's four-person discipline at the U25 Nextgen Classic. Gray-Withers/Pietrangelo finished 5-0 in the 20-team qualifying round. In their opening game, Gray-Withers/Pietrangelo defeated Brooklyn Ideson/Owen Henry (London, ON) 7-2, then won 7-2 against Amy Wheatcroft/Adam Naugler (Edmonton, AB) and 10-0 against Olivia Wynter/Cameron Sallaj (Moncton, NB). Gray-Withers/Pietrangelo won 10-2 against Richards/Davies, then won 7-4 against Zoe Cinnamon/Johnson Tao (Edmonton, AB) in their final qualifying round match. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Gracelyn Richards/Zach Davies (Edmonton, AB) 7-3, then in the semi-finals, they defeated Sophia Ryhorchuk/Ronan Peterson (Edmonton, AB) 9-1. This set up a match with Ontario's Grace Cave/Jayden King in the finals. Gray-Withers/Pietrangelo started with the hammer due to their perfect round robin record. In the first end, Gray-Withers/Pietrangelo kicked off with a deuce after a draw to the four-foot. Cave/king was forced to their single in the second, making a hit and stick. Gray-Withers/Pietrangelo kept the momentum, adding three more points in the third, making a 2-foot tap. In the fourth end, Gray-Withers/Pietrangelo stole one point, leaving Cave/King nothing on their last. In the fifth end, Cave/King was forced to another single, making another hit and stick. Gray-Withers/Pietrangelo forced handshakes in the sixth after making light-weight through the port hit for another deuce. Grabbing the win 7-2. That win clinches Gray-Withers/Pietrangelo a spot in the Curling Canada NextGen program, which helps them with funding and training from Curling Canada. |
