McEwen Controls Win in Toronto

Saskatchewan's Mike McEwen (photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) defeated Newfoundland and Labrador's Brad Gushue 7-4 to advance to a 2-1 record at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto, Ontario.

By Connor Simms,

Mike McEwen, with Colton Flasch at third, Kevin Marsh and Daniel Marsh on the front end, looks to add one more playoff appearance to cap off the 2024-2025 season.

Mike will also look to grab the career Grand Slam with a win this week, as he has yet to win the Players Championship. Mike's last slam win was in 2018 at the Elite 10 event in the 2018 season.

They took on Newfoundland and Labrador's Brad Gushue in Thursday afternoon action, winning the opening draw to the button for the hammer.

In the first end, with lots of rocks in play, McEwen managed to make a thin slash into the pocket, grabbing their deuce. Gushue was forced to draw to the four-foot for their single point in the second. After a missed line call from Gushue, McEwen was allowed to draw for their second point in the third end.

Gushue, unable to find offense, was forced to draw to the four-foot for their single once again. McEwen, remaining strong, grabbed two more when drawing to the four-foot. Gushue was forced once again in the sixth end, making a draw to the four-foot.

McEwen had the opportunity to get three more with a runback; they ended up missing, giving up a steal of one to Gushue. McEwen was able to make the double on his last in the eighth, adding one more to their total, grabbing the 7-4 victory.

McEwen now sits at a 2-1 record on the week, winning their opening match against Italy's Joel Retornaz. They then lost their second match to Northern Ontario's John Epping 5-7. In their next game, they will face Manitoba's Matt Dunstone at 7:00 am Central Time (CT) on Friday. They will then wrap up round robin with Alberta's Brad Jacobs at 2:30 pm CT.
