By: Cameron Sallaj It's a return to their winning ways for Matt Dunstone and his Winnipeg squad. After losing the Brier final last month, the team dropped a 4-3 extra end game to Brad Gushue to open the 2025 AMJ Players' Championship. Trying to get back on track, the team faced Joel Retornaz' Italian squad in Draw 6. A quick start for the Dunstone team with Colton Lott, E. J. Harnden and Ryan Harnden allowed them to put two on the board to open the scoring. They then forced the Italians to one in the second before getting that point back in the third to stay ahead by two. The turning point in the match came early as facing four on his final rock in four, Joel Retornaz was unable to connect on his final takeout attempt. This gifted Dunstone with a 7-1 lead which put the game away. Retornaz counted one in the fifth before conceding, 7-2 the final. Outside the disappointing Brier silver medal, Team Dunstone have been dominant on tour, rising to number two in the world and number one on the CTRS standings. Since the addition of E. J. at the start of December, the team won the Astec Safety Challenge and reached two semifinals in Swift Current and Guelph at the last Slam. Looking to peak for next seasons Olympic Trials, the team is one of the top contenders to represent Canada in Milano-Cortina in February. Elsewhere in Draw 6, Team Marco Hoesli (1-1; Glarus, SUI) counted two in the eighth end to get past Team Ross Whyte (1-1; Stirling, SCO) 6-5. The Scotts were in trouble for the entirety of the last end with Swiss fourth Philipp Hoesli making a double takeout to ensure the victory for his team. On the women's side, both Teams Silvana Tirinzoni (Aarau, SUI) and Kim Eun-jung (Gangneung, KOR) improved their records to 2-0 with victories over Teams Gim Eun-ji (Uijeongbu, KOR) and Kerri Einarson (Gimli, MB) respectively. Tirinzoni took three in the second end and never trailed en route to a 6-3 win while Kim scored the only multi-point end of the game in the sixth to win 5-2. The Canadian side is now 1-1 while Gim slips to 0-2. The next draw from the 2025 AMJ Players' Championship gets underway at 11:30 am ET with streaming of every game available on HomeTeamLive. |
