Hasselborg wins see-saw battle over Gim

Sweden's Team Anna Hasselborg (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) needed an extra end to score their first win in Toronto.

The third draw of the AMJ Players' Championship saw a tight match between two familiar opponents in Sweden's Anna Hasselborg and Korea's Gim Eun-ji. Meeting for the fourth time this season, the Koreans were trying to win their first game while the Swedes looked to make it four in a row.

Starting with the hammer, the Hasselborg rink with Sara McManus, Agnes Knochenhauer and Sofia Mabergs took the early lead in the game with a count of two in the second end. This was immediately matched, however, with two in the third by Gim. The Swedes then blanked the fourth to retain hammer in five.

Heading to the second half, a pair of costly mistakes by Hasselborg allowed Gim to steal one and take the lead for the first time in the match. Trying to stop the bleeding in six, the Swedish skip connected on her final runback to remove the Korean stone and score two, shifting the momentum back in her team's favor for the remainder of the game.

After a blank in seven, Gim could only manage one in the eighth, sending the game into overtime. In nine, an open hit and stick was all Hasselborg needed to count one and win the game 5-4, taking her first win in Toronto.

2024-25 has been a redemption season for Team Hasselborg who have been back in their top form after a few slow seasons. In January, the team won the WFG Masters, their first Slam title since 2022, and also finished second at the European Championships in November. After a disappointing quarterfinal exit at the World Championships two weeks ago, the team is looking for a second Players' Championship title with their first coming in 2022.

Next up for the Hasselborg rink is another Korean team in Ha Seung-youn with games against Momoha Tabata, Satsuki Fujisawa and Silvana Tirinzoni still to come. Gim will look to bounce back against Tirinzoni on Wednesday before meeting the same opponents in Pool B action.

In other Draw 3 scores, Team Brad Gushue (1-0; St. John's, NL) counted one in the eighth to best Team Matt Dunstone (0-1; Winnipeg, MB) 4-3. Team Yannick Schwaller (1-0; Geneva, SUI) downed countrymates Team Marco Hoesli (0-1; Glarus, SUI) 7-1 while Team Kim Eun-jung (1-0; Gangneung, KOR) won 7-5 against Team Isabella Wrana (0-1; Sundbyberg, SWE).

The next draw from the 2025 AMJ Players' Championship gets underway at 8 am ET Wednesday with streaming of every game available on HomeTeamLive.
