To advance to the championship game, Liu won 7-6 over Adam Casey (Regina, SK) in the semifinals of the 2017 Direct Horizontal Drilling Fall Classic in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; and won 5-4 over Reid Carruthers (Winnipeg, MB) in the quarterfinals. of the 2017 Direct Horizontal Drilling Fall Classic in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada;
 
Liu finished 3-0 in the 24-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Liu defeated Jason Ackerman (Regina, SK) 5-4, then won 8-7 against John Morris (Vernon, BC) and 5-0 against Yusuke Morozumi (Karuizawa, JPN) in their final qualifying round match.
 
For winning the Direct Horizontal Drilling Fall Classic Championship title, Liu earned 57.641 world rankings points along with the $12,000CDN first prize cheque, moving up 9 spots the World Ranking Standings into 16th place overall with 247.755 total points.
