To advance to the championship game, deConinck Smith won 5-2 over Thomas Usselman (Calgary, AB) in the semifinals of the 2016 Original 16 WCT Bonspiel in Calgary, Alberta; and won 6-1 over Bob Genoway (Calgary, AB) in the quarterfinals.
deConinck Smith finished 2-1 in the 24-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, deConinck Smith defeated Kurt Balderston (Grande Prairie, AB) 8-2, then went on to lose 5-4 against Walstad. deConinck Smith responded with a 6-4 win over Rhett Friesz (Airdrie, AB) in their final qualifying round match.
For winning the Original 16 WCT Bonspiel Championship title, deConinck Smith earned 25.299 world rankings points along with the $6,000CDN first prize cheque, moving up 18 spots the World Ranking Standings into 65th place overall with 79.062 total points. deConinck Smith ranks 49th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with 44.870 points earned so far this season.
