Unforced Error

Why not just call it an error.
Is there such a thing as a forced error?

OPINION:

An unforced error is when a skip (or any other team member for that matter) misses a generally accepted "easy" shot, (ie. an open hit, a draw to full rings for an extra point, etc.)

A forced error is when the last-rock team is forced into a high-degree of difficulty stone - that has a low possibility of completion.

The current best example of one player who performs both with reckless abandon is our old friend Jennifer Jones.

She'll routinely miss open hits and extra point draws during games - but will often execute amazingly difficult shots to secure games. As she gets older and her game deteriorates she's also missing those tough and forced shots.

Jones also secured her 2nd world gold medal earlier this year by cobbling a wonderful offensive defense vs. heavily favoured Anna Hasselborg. Hasselborg had to hit a sliver of an exposed Jones rock near the button to force Jones to make her final stone - but whiffed by virtually nothing - on an extremely high degree of difficulty shot.

Forced and unforced errors are likely taken from tennis, where they are commonly used terms.

They are better suited for tennis, as each player's action is more directly linked to what shot his/her opponent has just made - therefore, forcing an error directly is more obvious in tennis than in curling, where there is no direct reaction, and where there is more time to decide what shot to make, and where more options usually exist.
