3-0
NO - playoff lock
NL - this might finally be Gushue's year

2-1
ON - nice start but they'll likely fade
PE - see above
SK - can you be the sleeper if everyone thinks you're the sleeper?

1-2
TC - these guys haven't been great all year
BC - Cotter is a shooter, but they'll fall short of playoffs
MB - could be in the mix, but have to beat some good teams
QC - that loss to ON might stifle any playoff push this year
AB - if the skip starts shooting like the other 3...
NB - surprisingly competent

0-3
NT - usually is good for a couple upsets, but relegation is a possibility

Right so that's why Tim Hortons is the official coffee of the NHL, they might not own a team but they sponsor all of them and why for the kids. No its for their cheque book, the same reasons they want to look so involved in the community. Maybe we can get more funding in little rocks.

I would give PEI,SK AND ON more credit, these teams have been good all year and have played a lot this year and have won. TC and AB on the other hand are teams who haven't played together a lot this year and when they did had little success. Proof that you can't just throw a team together to win.

While Slams don't get TV numbers like the Brier, they're not "no TV Viewership". The numbers they get beat many NHL hockey games, are higher than Raptors games and get more than most things on TV in Canada.

This is why they've expanded to 5 events this year, 7 next year and 8 events the year after.

There is a reason for that.

IF the CCA wants to use the Canada Cup to decide the World Championship Rep I dont think anyone (Curlers / Provinces / CCA) would have a problem with that. It would give them time to prepare, schedule time from work etc etc.

But by changing the format of the Brier / Scotties they are playing with fire.

Brier is certainly not packed. Attendance at 50% of what it was last time the event was held in Calgary in 2009. Numbers have been trending downward and the Brier needs to evolve to be more relevant.

Adding Team Canada to an already popular event may not have been necessary but I do feel it adds to the Brier. And it guarantees a spot to the defending champion which is also great. But to do this to sacrifice another province seems silly. Because the tradition of the Brier is just that a tradition. All provinces are represented. If you want to piss on tradition then take out the obvious second team in Ontario. The reason in the past that you could never get rid of Norther Ontario was because they have always been there and it would mess with tradition. So now we have a brier with 2 teams from Alberta and 2 team from Ontario. That doesn't exactly scream National Championship.
And to speak to another note. The smaller provinces need an event like this to continue to grow the sport in their province. It seems many of these smaller provincial teams to muster up enough cash to make 1 or 2 trips to bigger events throughout the year. This is the best they can do for now. Going to the brier may be their 3rd big event. They are getting more exposure each year on bigger stages but like most things in this country the smaller provinces take a little more time to catch up. Making a smaller province sit out each year will significantly hurt curling development in that province. This does not grow the game.

Same thing with attendance last year in Kamloops. Not a healthy trend. I would think if you are from a relegation province very risky to commit a week when your team might not qualify( and there used to be a lot of Nova Scotians at the Brier).

Attendance has been trending downward well before relegation because an issue. To add to that, I would believe CCA has the ticket sales and where people are coming from to suggest that the Scotties and Brier relies much less on traveling crowds from far away than we know. It's more about the local ticket sales.

.

The major sponsors care more about tv viewers than ticket sales any ways. Just look at all of the national prime time exposure they get and the sponsors are the ones cutting the cheques not ticket sales, tickets are a little part of revenue made.

Yeah what's wrong with Ottawa or ontario for that matter? The whole time I lived in Halifax I always heard "oh you upper Canadians" and then insert reason to cry about ontario. Maybe NS should produce better curlers, the junior
women look good, next work on the men's side.

Lot's written on all of this

Here's my bottom line.......

Let the curlers from coast to coast to coast vote on this format and a format that includes 14 teams or how ever # of teams required to eliminate relegation but includes Team Canada.
Anyone who is a member of a league or a club...any age, male and female
Have a vote....
Don't let the Back Room Boys and Girls of the CCA decide. Let the chips fall where they will.

What could be fairer than that.

Having the experience of winning more than one Canadian Championship and having played in 5 Briers and paying Club dues for 30 years I want a vote and so should all players.

End of story

Here's Brier numbers going back to 1982 ..TV Numbers are even more impressive. If your attempting to argue the Slams are a huge success your delusional ...but please send us the attendance numbers to compare (TV or actual) their so low they don't release them because they are embarrassed. Keep in mind Teams pay huge entry fees to help with the prize money to get into these events and the average fan cares not to watch

If it is all about the level of competition, then why stop at relegation and play-ins? Certainly one could argue that a number of other teams are better than the PEI, NB and NT and even BC and Quebec.

Call it the Brier but just make it a Slam event and you'll get the best teams cause that's what the CCA appears to want.

Can anyone enlighten me why the provincial associations voted for this?

If I may interject for a moment-this is a forum for people who care about curling. Too often on forums like these a disagreement on an issue degenerates into a "pissing" contest of insults. Let's keep this civil-after all, it's curling not WWE.

Back to the issue of attendance-from the looks of things, Brier/Scotties attendance will continue to decline if for no other reason, the TV coverage gives far more insight, a better view (especially with 2 games now) and most importantly, it's FREE. Something else to remember (from somebody's who's been there), a lot of fans (who have bought tickets) can often be found in the Brier Patch-especially when their team isn't on the ice.

Staging the Brier in (no disrespect to B.C.) a "remote" location didn't help either.

Huge loss for PEI to quebec today that probably cost them their playoff hopes. they have the top 4 favorites consecutively in the next 2 days. they need to find a way to get at least 2 wins out of those games to have a hope of staying in playoff contention but to be honest its more likely for me they drop to 2-6 after this block of 4 games or 3-5 at best.

IF they can get out at 4-4 though they are in great shape to make playoffs with manitoba, northwest territories and new brunswick their last 3 games

i hope they can pull it off. id love to see them get there. even a tiebreaker would be huge

Northern Ontario giving Ontario a curling lesson...SK giving TC a curling lesson. Maybe big daddy Howard can help his son's team out. And TC's coach needs to shake up his team. I highly doubt TC will make the playoffs.

I liked it when TSN left the blowout games to show the more interesting ones, but with multiple games being shown, it's difficult.
