2014 Masters of Curling
It all starts tonight in Selkirk, Sportsnet coverage starts Thursday afternoon all the way into the men's and women's finals on Sunday.
Homan is the two-time defending champion at the event, while Glenn Howard has owned the event, having won it six times including last year.
Gotta pick Mike McEwen due to his 4 titles this year(only one defeat in that span) and Jennifer Jones based off of her Autumn Gold title over Homan.
Can't wait

I'm gonna put my money on Jacobs and Muirhead. Jacobs has yet to win a slam event and I think they're due. Muirhead hasn't won an international event yet this season so I think they're also due.

i wont make predictions. you cant ever count out howard or stoughton at these events. epping is already cooling down after a hot start and jacobs seems to be too. safe bet would probably be mcewen. none of the international sides are looking great right now, not enough to win the whole thing.
womens side i think the winner will be one of muirhead, sigfridsson, jones or homan although i'd love to be wrong and see someone unexpected win one of the big ones. same thing for the men really.

okay what the hell is going on with the stoughton/gushue scoreboard?
first it had brad with a steal of 2
then that was erased and jeff scored 3 twice
now brad is elading 4-2 in the 8th end so it should be over but apparently they are playing an extra end and still throwing stones

And then Kristy McDonald continues her reign of red terror - pulverizing Princess in an extra end.
Jones finished at 45%. Interestingly, the other three players didn't suffer all that much, as Jennifer's team as a whole actually outshot Allison's by five points. Goes to show you that sometimes, statistics, shmatistics...presumably there's a reason why Bill James never got into curling.

you know it would be okay to use words like defeated.
looks like jen got her stinker game out of the way though
jeff beat brad. although the score changed on here like 6 different times so that was annoying

Kate Cameron is the wild card but she looks real comfortable in the games I've seen . . . Kristy, of course is the key. She's now gone to the Scotts and competed hard against some of the best - and not having Carey around for those nonsensical discussions might be the best thing that's happened to her. She's hungry, appears confident, throws the rock nicely and finally she's probably as mentally tough as any women curler in Manitoba other than JJ.
Needs to get out to more national and international events but Manitoba womens teams seem to be doing just that this year.
yeah, manitoba teams are doing well this year, which, as a manitoban is nice to see.
still though, i know you like this team but you do tend to over use words like crushed and man handled when they arent really appropriate.
alison flaxey defeated jones 6-1 yesterday, she crushed her. kristy defeated eve by 2 points in an extra end. she did not pulverize her

As a fan, the grand slam events are always exciting to watch. Could be a bit more exciting this year with seeing all the top teams playing, many of them with new formations.
From a pure fan perspective, I offered up my blog predictions for the Masters event. Feel free to take a look, share some thoughts, agree or disagree. I am not a huge curler, don't really know many curlers but just a true fan of the sport since I was a little kid going to the Scotties with my grandparents.
#TwineTime Blog
It has been exciting to have athletes like Mike McEwen and Nik Edin comment, RT and fav my tweets on this blog though. Yesterday I even had Team Homan send me a a tweet about how they liked my predicted final on the women's side. One of the reasons why I love the sport, the athletes on the ice are personable and actually interact with the fans of the sport on a regular basis.
Enjoy the grand slam everyone....

What if she stayed over night and made the quick 1hr30min drive from Portage to Selkirk that next morning?

That would be too simple a plan.

i like kevin , i do but in his statement that jen started well right out of the blocks and dint stumble at all so far is not right. she might have made it deep in the stockholm cup but she had some losses and 1 shocking one to a swedish junior team for sure.
maybe he didnt pay attention to that one, i dont know
ulsrud is really struggling here, which i didnt see coming.they just dont seem like themselves this event. they usually curl a lot of events but havent this year. maybe thats hurting them

OUCH
Rachel just gave a steal of 4 to tirinzoni and saw a 5-1 lead become an 8-5 deficit
they have not looked good at all here though. needed a paetz collapse to win their first game. probably should be 1-2 right now

Jen was a bit unsteady coming out of the gate but has steadied the ship and are curling strong now. Still, nowhere near Olympic form. Jill Officer is closest to Sochi form, JJ and K are a bit behind.
thats true but, as i said he said she hasnt had any blips. had no shocking losses which isnt right. unless you call that loss to isabella wrna acceptable
but like i said maybe he didnt watch that event

Cost & Sponsorship are my best guesses!
But now they're world champions after vanquishing Ms. Homan, Ott has retired (evidently) so the Swiss may be funding this team as their #1 squad - with Tirinzoni a close 2nd, followed by Paetz and the rest of them.
yeah but switzerland has been funding their top teams to travel i believe and for as ineffectual as feltscher has been on the bigger stages up until last year she was easily always one of switzerland's top 3 teams whether behind tirinzoni and ott or sandwiched in between so it should have been made available to her as well.
maybe its just personal choice

Hope Sportnet has an alternative package to run as this promises to be a huge mis-match.
There isn't one position where Carey's team can claim to match up to Homan's squad.
Homan is substantially better than Chelsea.
Emma Miskew and Laura Crocker aren't even in the same universe.
Courtney and Weagle are one of the true monster front ends in women's curling.
Tune in early, could be over quickly.
You do know that Carey beat Homan in the Autumn Gold in Calgary?

1-0 after 4. Heard they are debating switching to the 5-1 Jones v. Sidorova game or the replay of the Lehmann vs Schopp game from the German Euro qualifier from 2 weeks ago.

In 13 matches against each other, Carey has won 7. Rachel has won more recently, but Carey is no slouch either.

i have to say im surprised at how much glenn howard and the team have struggled. they are very good at beating who they should but whenever they come up against one of the other top teams they lose
huge win for team epping over them this morning. some people had that team going winless here
