Last Chance Tourney

Gerry thanks for the update...

Any idea who would host the Last Chance Tourney.

I suspect that they would have both men and womens event at the same time and location.

If the Chinese Men did not qualify, I think China would have made a bid for it...

However it looks like Germany or the Czech Republic could be the favourites since both teams are in this tourney. The WCF won't go "Superbowl Hosts" and place this in a neutral country???

Bet I could have made big bucks if I bet that the Chinese Men would qualify first over their Golden Flower Sisters...

I'll add Japan to this list since both teams are in the last chance as well...

To be honest im surprised germany has shown any kind of interest at all in hosting this since their interest in curling is about none.

The mens event should be very competitive and its hard to predict. the womens event..not so much

Tiebreaker is who had the better result this season.

So looking at the final standings, the USA vs SUI game was huge. If the US won that game, they would have moved ahead of SUI for the last Olympic spot?

Yes. That was a pivotal game. If the US had won and all else stayed the same, then US would have gotten the last spot.

Looking back at the week the Swiss game was big, but there were 4 one point losses and a steal in the tenth by a Russian team that finished below them.

Looking even closer we see a 4 point end vs. Sweden after jumping out to a lead and a first end steal of 3 by Japan.

It really came down to 3 or 4 ends that not only kept us out of the straight shot to Sochi but the playoffs as well.

Yes, you can say that about any competition, but I think if this wasn't their first time to the dance they would have won two or three more games. And I also would not be surprised to see them in December at the challenge round qualifying us for the Olympics.

TJ

Did anybody else catch that shot Brady made vs. Norway in the 10th on youtube after the Canada game?

Loved Brady's attitude in Norway game -- going for the win. Even tho USA dnq for Olympics, got to give Brady lots of credit for how he played. Pretty clear from shooting percentages that he did not have as much help as most of the skips.

Once again i will express my surprise that germany is holding this event. Considering the lack of attention curling gets there and the their seeming lack of interest in hosting a worlds it surprises me they'd put in a bid to host this event. Perhaps the fact that neither their mens or womens teams have qualified directly has sounded the alarm.

misty1 is surprised that the WCF chose Germany for the qualifying event "considering the lack of attention curling gets there." Not sure we should be surprised by anything WCF does. Look where women had to play worlds since the mens/womens events were separated.

I don't think you're aware of Fuessen's extensive partnership with the WCF, and I am not surprised by this decision at all. The DCV (German Curling Federation) has a great relationship with the WCF. Fuessen has hosted the WCF Junior Camp, instructor, officiating, and icemaker courses for several years now.

In addition, the Fuessen arena hosted the 2007 Europeans, and has also hosted the world juniors. It is a great facility/area that the WCF has extensive knowledge of.

I think it makes sense that a nation that doesn't have teams pre-qualified for the Olympics hosts this event. Would it make sense to host this event in Canada or Scotland, without any national teams in the event? No. By hosting this event in a (centrally-located) country with so much on the line (for the host country, especially) maybe it will add some extra interest for curling in Germany!
