i wouldnt say manitoba was an upset . einarson was co-favorite with mcdonald.

really in all provinces the favorites only won 3 times: in prince edward island, quebec and manitoba

and you could say northern ontario since, based on form going in mccarville probably was the slight favorite

just because lawton, sweeting and homan arent there doesnt mean there's no competition. alberta and northern ontario will be very tough. larouche and hanna are wild cards but if they get hot will be tough as well

I don't think they are worried about Team Canada. There is a lot of unknown team dynamic. These teams will be scrambling for a play off spot and by then - the ones who make it - will be ready to topple the veterans, should they remain in the running. Endurance and coaching will be big factors. Einarson. Campbell. Carey. I like Thompson but would be a shame for Galusha to miss this. Hanna seems relaxed. Larouche is a veteran now. Gotta cheer for Kerry and Chelsea, I guess.

Is this the last year for relegation? I thought I read that they had decided it was not a good plan.

if jones is even a little off there's an opportunity for about 5 other teams to win this(quebec, northern ontario, alberta, ontario, manitoba)

well , marie-france has been out for a while so she is a wild card but if she is playing well she is a contender in this field for sure. id only rank canada, northern ontario and alberta ahead of her if she is on her A game.

certainly ahead of someone with no skipping experience at this event

not sure what you have against her

Aside from the Skins and Continental Cup, Jones hasn't been all that good this year. Agree that it is more wide open than many think. Carey is the chief adversary in my view, especially with the home province crowd. But several other teams could win it all as well.

100 % biased opinion

With all these upsets and or favourite teams not getting to the scotties, don't count out NS making the playoffs or a tie break. Good team that beat good teams to get there.

I echo this. I think coining anyone among them as fawns is fallacious. <<haha word came out, but had to check spelling>>. Lots of tough athletes in the field. That's why I say coaching will matter. Team players here. Hungry team players. There will be a new spirit out there. The most baffled among the regular crew will be the commentators, tip toeing to avoid putting their foot in their mouths. Solid modern era teams - it will be new school at the Scotties. Old school will try to fit in, but ... well, I can't see another round of it. I see a newly ordained champ - faring well at the worlds.

Yet of 5 trips to worlds.. J Jones won one Gold in 2008 against
a 24 yr old fawn from China..and Norberg was not there for Sweden...

This STOH is going to be a good one..some people actually think it wont be 2011 all over again

Speaking of worlds, I am not sure any of these teams might be able to conquer the likes of Muirhead, Siderova even the Koreans. Maybe Jones. However, it should be an interesting Scotties. I have a feeling the year of upsets will continue.

If you're going to trash someone, at least get your facts right. She is in the STOH because she won the national championship last year over the likes of Homan, Sweeting, etc. That is, she won an event with some of the best curlers in the world playing. That's not a free ride out of what you consider a thin Manitoba pool of female curlers.

As for Jones' winning only 1 gold medal at the Worlds, Rachel Homan (the best curler in the world right now) has failed in both her World Championship Gold tries. It is not as simple to win as you suggest. I respect your opinion (even if I don't agree with it). But when you are criticizing the past accomplishments of curlers like Jones include all the facts, not just the ones that suit your argument. Like the fact that Jones was the first woman in history to go undefeated at the Olympics. But that doesn't fit the attempt to minimize her accomplishments...so why mention it.

Exactly - Jennifer Jones has never been "Gifted" anything. She's earned her spot and done it repeatedly. If anything she should have 6 or 7 Scott titles, 2 or 3 world titles.

If she can somehow muster up the required shots to win in Grande Prairie it sets her up nicely for the next Olympic cycle and also means Manitoba womens curling can continue developing quality replacements for Team Jones.

43 yr old skip with 42 yr old 2nd and 37 yr old lead. Chances of slithering thru against monsters like Homan, Sweeting, Carey, even Einarson & McCarville appears fair to middlin' ---- but Jones has uncanny ability to grind thru adversity.
Other than Lisa Weagle Team Homan wlll be hitting their late 20s. Perhaps Sweeting & Carey team up?

OMG, you are so exhausting. Since January 4th you have posted 232 comments and I'm sure JJ has been mentioned in every one of them. Either you are tearing her down or attacking verbally someone on her rink. In the next breath they are The Golden Girls and will remain Golden until they either retire or Lawes takes over the rink, (your words not mine). I don't think anyone on this curling forum is more aware of her accomplishments as you continue to pelt us with this info. How about you give it a rest until at least the Scotties begin.

tirinzoni is hardly a rising star. she has been in the game since 1998.

Brier field known so far:

Newfoundland - Brad Gushue
Quebec - Jean-Michel Menard
Prince Edward Island - Adam Casey

and a good start for Epping in Ontario. yes,i know, he wasnt playing someone expected to be there at the end but its good to be able to get through those games you are expected to win with minimal fuss.

An upset, yes - a huge upset, no. Rene Comeau is a Canadian Junior bronze and silver medalist.
