Better tie breakers

I like that the World curling does not use tie breaker games, just head to head matchups to break ties. This is a problem when 3 or more teams tie. Here is my suggestion when this happens. Total up points scored by each tied team in their first ends. High total goes on. If still tied total up end #2 points. This gives an easy way to break ties AND it might discourage teams (especially women’s teams) from deliberately blanking the early ends, and make all the ends exciting to watch. Comments?

I HATE anything but actually playing a game to break the tie. I will concede that "maybe" head to head to break a 2 way tie but if there's a 3 way tie, 3 plays 2, winner play 1, then that team moves on, even if you play into the night. If you poll the teams BEFORE the event starts, ALL will say play it out. Start a day early, or not even, start Saturday morning instead of the afternoon, add tiebreak draw into the schedule, to be revoked if not needed. If you don't need a tie break, don't play it. Fans attending will adjust their schedule accordingly. TV would love extra games, let the B or even C team commentate, or even cheaper, just mic the players. Extra games are extra revenue. TV viewers would eat it up. Why would anyone want their fate based on who can draw the button, it should be who can win the game...IMO

If you don't want your fate decided by a draw to the button, win more games and don't let your fate rest on a tiebreaker.

I don’t think TV likes tie breaker games, as they have to devote a slot to a tie breaker, and if none is needed, then they have a slot to fill, usually with a rerun game that no one watches

As someone who has volunteered for a couple tournaments, I would have to think that managing staff, volunteers and ice techs would also be a factor in not having tie-breakers. It seems like it would be a pain to get extra staffing for a morning draw that doesn't happen about half the time.

Not to mention the difficulties in trying to get a crowd for the sporadically scheduled event. If I was an organizer, I would probably be in the "no tie breaker" camp.

I think the current system is fine. At least it's based on the outcome of the competition and player skill, instead of random luck like a coin flip.

Nice to have ties broken on the ice but when you have 13 teams playing a round robin and nearly half of those teams qualifying for the playoffs, it is not practical to have tied teams play even more games to get into playoffs.

Essentially, what you're seeing is the Top 4 plus tiebreakers being covered off with 6 of 13 teams making the playoffs. Would be same format for a 12 team event.

What they're doing is locking in games and calling them playoff games. This is a great marketing opportunity as well as there's a lot more buzz to making Quarterfinals than playing a tiebreaker to media and fans.

I read about the Czech women's team making the first ever playoff game for their country. Was a story of some pride. It's a way to grow the game.

There has been some question about Juniors and they'll likely be revisiting things there in time with only 4 from 10 making it in and people not liking it.

The ways things work out, if you're in a big tie for the last playoff spot in a 13 team tournament, you're going to be around .500 record. It's been 6-6 as the last playoff team in the Women's both years and men's last year. This year the top separated a bit more.
