Thank you NBC Sports
Thank you NBC Sports for showing U.S Olympic trials. Brown/Pottinger on this evening and Fenson/Shuster Sunday at 11:00. Great coverage!

so I take it that the two winning teams not only go to Sochi, but also the Continental Cup?

Yes, great job NBC! Just a couple of comments/regrets.
I just wish that during the Saturday Fenson/Shuster game 5th end break they hadn't shown that knucklehead in the stands who stuck his feet in the air and gyrated while grabbing the back of his upper legs? Classy. Four guys sitting in red coats, one knucklehead.
The games had more rocks in play and the games were played more in the four foot. Sorry but ten end game hit-a-thon's that we had on Saturday don't do much for viewership and just show the validity of just showing skip and vice stones at the Olympics.
I wish Fargo would have got some fans in the stands. After the Brown victory it was disappointing to see so few people in the seats.

Ten ends has to remain until the Worlds/Olys go to 8. Need to match the format.
To get more fannies in the seats, go somewhere with a population base. Nothing against Fargo but Philly had 2500 for the finals of the Nationals with maybe 400 curlers in that count. ND has a population of 700k, Philly has a population of 1.9mil. Put it in Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Philly, Boston, etc. Maybe in four years they could have it in the Bronx.
Cutting out in the middle of the end for commercials is still annoying to me.
We will see what today brings.

I realize they need to be 10 ends, or 11 in this case, but what a bore watching take after take after take. I don't think it helps our approach when entering international competition where the game is played in the four foot.
Let's hope todays game isn't 2-1.

So, is it better to have a blank/blank/blank game or a game that goes 4 ends instead of 10. I don't know. Are the "sponsers" happy not to get an extra hour of commercials? Anybody out there with TV expertise?

That was probably worst case scenario for NBC. Three hours scheduled, 1 hour of broadcast.
Word is the leg in the air, buttock grabbing guy in the stands was Seamunluver.

Kind of interesting that when national events are held in "curling country" nobody shows up to watch but when they are held in newer curling territory, e.g. Philly, the crowds are there. Does this reflect lack of interest in national events by most experienced curlers while newbies are just looking to see curling wherever they can?

It reflects North Dakotans' general lack of interest in anything that isn't both a) familiar and b) the hometown team. You could have held the actual Olympics in Fargo and gotten about the same turnout from the locals.

Not just Philly, but anyplace that embraces amateur athletics would of been better (Indianapolis and Omaha come to mind).

Thank You NBC Sports
You guys could be right and it did look a bit thin. It obviously wasn't close to a sell out, but the side shots can be deceiving. I don't recall seeing shots of the ends, assuming there must have been some seating even it was up above coaches, etc... I'm about six hours away, have club member curling ( and still curling - go Landsteiner), just didn't go but some other locals did. Faithfully followed all week and watched tv coverage, phone rang off the hook yesterday with people trying to figure out if they got NBC sports network, went to church this morning and a bunch of people (curlers) seemed totally oblivious that this event was going on - it was odd. With all the social media stuff, I was shocked. Perhaps our season starts so late that it just caught people off guard a bit. Anyway, hoping that there is some tv or web coverage of qualifying event in Germany, would be a good opportunity to set some club events around. Did send the obligatory albeit heartfelt thank you to NBC for curling coverage.

All true. I thought all the empty seats was an embarrassment.
In the future, I would think that all trials would need to be in the vacinity of a population center.

For those calling on the Trials to go to large population bases like Chicago or Philadelphia I'll point out that there are two main disadvantages to these places.
The first is money. The facilities in these locations will charge more.
The second is media saturation. Swimming and gymnastics have both staged well-attended and successful national championships and/or Olympic trials in places like Omaha or Hartford, Conn. It's very difficult to compete with the Bears or Phillies for media attention, but go to these medium-sized cities and it's much easier to get local news coverage, plus for many of these people it is a rare opportunity to see the best athletes in the nation or world in their own neighborhoods.

Population of Hartford county, CT - 900k. How about Bridgeport, CT? Nice ice arena seating 2500 or so, close to NYC and local curling club a mile away for volunteers.
Omaha is 425k. Also good. So, medium size cities is good, medium size states, not so good.
The Nationals in Philly (actually Ashton, PA) made money so it must not have been that expensive for ice. And they are having it back which means they are excited for it and believe in the product.
Anyone know what the attendance was at Fargo? Either max for a draw or for the week?
JH
was at Lowell where you could hear the crickets chirping and that was a Men's Worlds.

jhcurl - The Philadelphia Nationals is a good example of success in major metropolitan regions, but my impression from the TESN feed was that the venue was on the small side and many people were turned away at the door for the final. When the USCA chooses a host for the Pyeongchang Olympic Trials they will want a decent sized arena which will be costlier.

I recommend Omaha. Over the years, the Omaha Sports Commission (OSC) has been very aggressive in getting amateur events:
http://www.omahasports.org/
1. North American Volleyball Championships
2. College World Series
3. Olympic Swimming Trials (recently won their 3rd bid)
4. NCAA Div 1 Wrestling Championships
5. 1st Round March Madness
6. NCAA Div 1 Volleyball Championships

Not necessarily....
Honestly, it's better for the sport to oversell a 2000 seat arena for a major televised game than it is to half fill an 8,000 seat arena.
There's a vibe about "a packed house" that translates to great TV, regardless of the actual size of the house.
Would I try to go someplace larger than Ice House? Yeah, probably...but I wouldn't go a *ton* larger.

The next Olympics is 2018. Trials then, end of 2017. Its expected that Kingsbridge Ice facility in NYC will be up and running. I hope that can all come together.

FREE fills the seats
Measurement drives behavior. Instead of measuring the money made on ticket sales, measure the number of bodies in the seats. Accept that operational costs will have to be covered by other revenue sources like advertising, then give away all seats for free to ensure a packed building. With a full building, more can be charged for advertising.
