Jamcan, I see the point you are trying to make, but I have an afterthought on it to consider:
Any curling club/arena/etc. can have rocks with crisp striking bands. It is nothing more than the fact that those rocks are newer and the quality control involved in grinding granite into a curling stone is more precise than say 20+ years ago as many club's rocks are in age. We should all be lobbying our clubs to buy new rocks like this if their's are worn out. And then after a certain time frame, we will all be making those hard shots more routinely and the 5 rock rule will definitely be needed.
So in comparing that to golf, it is not a double standard in equipment. It is more like the Pro's with the most money using new equipment, and the Amateurs that can't afford new equipment are still using their persimmons and worn out blades, but complaining when the rules are changed when all they'd have to do to catch up is buy newer equipment and put in the work to improve.
One final note: Different granite's have different properties, so even a striking band size ruling would not help. Some stones just would naturally have more liveliness than others. So unless you want a ruling to put all but one supplier out of business and force everyone to buy new rocks from that single source, you will never have 100% equality in this aspect. IMHO your striking band size complaint is pointless, sorry.

Look at ice hockey which adapted their rules relating to handling the puck by the goaltender. Instead of eliminating shots let's look at minimizng the effect of sweeping on outcomes. I suggest allowing sweeping between the hoglines only. The tick just got tougher and now throwers need to be more precise on all shots. If you look at the percentages in mixed doubles you see the effect on shot making when sweeping is minimised and I think it is the biggest advantage the top teams have. Do not take it away, just allow it only between the hotlines. Give it a go at some slam, seems to be the new testing ground for rules.

I... am continually.... baffled? perplexed?... puzzled? by the many posters here who seem to want to see less entertaining games and fewer shots made.
Happy holidays everyone, I'm going to depart this madhouse for a few days and retreat to the comfort of a stiff eggnog.

lol In 10-15 years the game will have emerged into a 6-7 rock-free guard zone rule. Let's eventually not allow any take out's or run backs.
I say that obviously tongue in cheek, but just look back on how curling has evolved over the years.

why is it that the ice has to be so perfect with same amount of curl at all events? And why do teams have to practice before every game? Go back to "non-standard" ice and no practice so the teams have to learn the ice as the game progresses. Every thing now is set to make shot making easier -- almost too easy for the top teams.

If you did that, what will happen is teams will play even more defensive from the start. If the ice is inconsistent and/or they have to play a couple ends to learn it, you wont see teams taking risks by putting as many rocks in play.
When the ice is so good, you get teams willing to risk the whole end on one big shot. And they're willing to put rocks in play to setup that one big shot. OR they're willing to play aggressive knowing that if they get into trouble, they can make that one big shot to get out of jail.
If they can't trust the ice, games will become a lot more basic. And bad for entertainment value.

It's the same reason that the PGA tour doesn't play on municipal courses. The good ice enables these guys to do what they do best-fancy shootin'!

Game 4:
Orest Meleschuk, Dave Romano, John Hanesiak, Pat Hailley
vs
Bob Labonte, Frank Aasand, John Aasand, Ray Morgan
That should get the Americans watching...
