Not sure I agree the below counts as a "virtual tie" as Curling Canada stated. Seems pretty clear Thompson has 3.37 more points (~2.8% more). How does Curling Canada arbitrarily come up with this number? If Thompson was 5 points ahead would that have been enough? If a third team was sandwiched in between would there be a three-way tie-breaker. I would be pissed if I was Team Thompson. Nowhere in their "rules for becoming Team Canada" was there stated a tie-breaker being held if two teams were really close to the last spot.
Karla Thompson 138.616
Briane Meilleur 134.790

Absolutely brutal that Curl Canada called it a tie between Thompson and Meilleur. It wasn't a tie. One team acquired more points than the other. Just like in a curling game, if one team gets more points than the other, they win. It doesn't matter if they have 1 more point or 15 more points. The only thing that matters is that one team is ahead at the end.
If you measure two rocks at the completion of an end, and one is slightly closer, that team gets the point. You don't play another end to see who would have gotten the point just because the two rocks were close. It doesn't matter if it was 1 millimeter closer, or 12 feet closer. It was closer.

I found the rule: http://www.curling.ca/team-canada/c...are-calculated/
Scroll to the bottom and look at #5. Rachel Homan has 455.229 points, and 1% of that is 4.552. Thompson is out front by 3.826 points, so within the 1%. They are about 2.8% above Meilleur, but that's not the calculation.
It doesn't look like the two teams played in any of the same events, so it skips to tiebreaker #4, which is a one game playoff. Yay for more relegation!

Hey Squiggsy, great find! I have no problem with that since it is clearly published. I happily fall on my sword.

Lawton
With all due respect to Stephanie Lawton (she is a great curler), how did she qualify as the 6th position in the pretrials? She and only one other player from 2015-16 registered in her 2016-17 team.

This is another example of why Curling Canada should have come out with a standings page. For Lawton she had 212.45 points in 2015-16. That alone should have gotten her into the Trials or Pre-Trials. But, as you said, only her and Singler are left from that team. On the worldcurl.com site, her two year total is 164.457, with the 2016-17 portion being 75.579. This means she is getting credit for 88.878 points from 2015-16. That's roughly 42% of the 2015-16 points coming forward.
Also, on the worlcurl.com 2 year rankings, there are 5 teams above Lawton in the standings for the 2 year spot, that aren't already qualified. Robertson leads this group with 207.519. next are Thompson (183.251) and Meilleur (182.257). Since those two are in the virtual tie, it would make sense that one of those two get the 10 spot, and the other gets the 12 spot, if the rankings on worldcurl.com are correct. I have no idea if they are or not. Lawton is over 43 points behind Robertson, and almost 20 points behind Thomspon/Meilleur from that page. It's easy to find 1 year CTRS rankings; it's difficult to find 2 year totals. Maybe Lawton brought back one of her teammates, or brought one back as a fifth in order to get the points back. I have no idea, since Curling Canada didn't release rosters.

This was not a confirmed list and what I heard through the city who had a meeting last week with curl canada. They expected all teams would be coming except 1 which likely would be Lawton. Hopefully a confirmation will be made soon.

This pre-trials field is better than the men's, still at least 1 team I've never heard before.

Lawton should be out, all 2015-16 spots on listing would have defaulted to 2017 listing, then Thompson is in and Meilleur/Birchard are now tied for last two season spot..

Lawton gets a spot based on her two-year points total. Her 2015/16 team had enough points in 1 year alone to claim a 2-year spot so it depends on what lineup she comes back with this season. If Marliese Kasner or Trish Paulsen are back in the lineup, they're eligible to play in the Pre-Trials.

2 additional berths per gender announced for Pre-Trials to avoid tiebreaking scenarios:
Men - Mark Bice (ON) and Jamie Murphy (NS)
Women - Thompson (BC) and Meilleur (MB) both in, canceling the tiebreaker, Shannon Birchard (MB) also added to the field.

Wow! How sensible! That is refreshing. I can just see the meeting, "Hey, why don't we just let them all in?" Folks look around the table. Shrug? Shrug? Shrug? Group replies, "Okay!" Everybody is happy. WTG bureaucracy.

Looking at the WCT team's list for the upcoming season, it looks as if Stefanie Lawton will forfeit her berth at the pre-trials. Her new lineup consists of Brooklyn Lemon at lead, Cristina Goertzen at second and Stephanie Schmidt at third.
Lemon was a former member of the Amber Holland squad that competed at the 2013 Pre-Trials. Goertzen was the finalist at this year's Saskatchewan Scotties with Robyn Silvernagle. Schmidt played with Lawton at the 2015 Scotties filling in for the injured Sherri Singler. She has played with Michelle Englot and Breanne Meakin since that Scotties. Lots of potential for this team if they are willing to put the work in.
Tough to see Singler and Beth Iskiw not curling this year. Could possibly be just a season off to rest before the next Olympic cycle. Hopefully they curl competitively again in the coming years.

How is it that the small town host knows Lawton will not be there but curling Canada deems it necessary to open the invite for 2 more teams because of a close tie...... that doesn't exist if they JUST ASK who will be eligible to attend?????
