Covid-19
Sadly, the curling world has lost someone to the pandemic. Christian Leibbrandt from Netherlands recently passed away. He served as both photographer and official at many events. His wife Shari Leibbrandt-Demmon, formerly of Calgary, has served as coach of the Dutch mens’ team for several years. Condolences to Shari and the rest of Christian’s family.

In her weekly column for The Courier, Eve Muirhead says they’ve just been told that the Portage la Prairie event has been cancelled for next season due to COVID.

^ As they're usually quite competitive on the ice, it's always fun to see how well they all get along off the ice.

With out a vacine, group limits will still be in place. Not sure how a league or curling club can funtion with a limit of 50 people.
Anyone see the 2020/21 season going ahead without a vacine?

It's a wait-and-see thing right now. Most clubs will have until mid to late August to firm up their plans, so we really need to see where this virus takes us.
Even if a club can figure out how to safely operate if social distancing rules remain, how can the game itself even be played? No sweeping? Two man teams only? Masks? Staggered start times? Will there be any socializing after?
The big question is "will people return"? Some won't be able to financially afford it. Others will be afraid. More still won't like the new rules and limitations.
It's going to be one screwed up curling season and I think some clubs will be forced to permanently close.

.
Yes, clubs will lose members.
And I don't think the season will start in Sept./Oct. as usual.
But I do believe that the season can be salvaged.
Sweepers can stay 6 feet apart - for the past few years, it's been quite rare that both sweepers sweep at the same time, anyway.
Wipe the rock handles with peroxide or alcohol after every game. During games, pay particular attention to ensuring that every player throws the same rocks throughout the game. If players want to switch rocks during a game, make sure to wipe the handles.
I don't see a problem with everyone wearing a mask - it's a cold environment, after all. I wouldn't want to wear a mask playing outdoor soccer on a summer day, but I see no problem with people wearing them to curl.
No socializing after the games, as everyone maintaining a 6 foot separation would be next to impossible. This would cut into the club's revenue, of course - but I don't see this as being optional.
So it is feasible, with some effort by everyone.
The main problem I see is in the locker rooms. In order to maintain a 6 foot separation in locker rooms, there would have to be only a specific number of people allowed in at a time. But giving every 'shift' 10 minutes - or even 5 minutes - would really stretch out the locker room time, requiring people to arrive an hour before their game.

I do think that curling could have adjustment made which still make the game playable, as opposed to a contact sport such as say, MMA.
Very interesting release from NWT Curling. I do wonder what the "Return to Curling Guidelines" will entail. Making the skips sweep their own rocks for a change? ;)
NWT Curling
2 hrs ·
As many of you are aware the GNWT recently announced its Emerging Wisely plan which outlines the path forward to emerging safely and wisely from the current COVID-19 public health restrictions. The document stated that curling could return when final measures are lifted. We want to notify our curling members that the NWT Curling Association (NWTCA) is working with the GNWT, Curling Canada, the Provincial/Territorials Curling Associations and Sport North in creating "Return to Curling Guidelines" that will enable curling to return this fall in a safe and responsible manner. The NWTCA will offer recommendations for club administrators, coaches, and anyone organizing curling-related activities. The NWTCA is committed to safe sport and will work with our partners over the coming weeks. If practiced responsibly, curling can be a great opportunity for participants to relieve stress, socialize with others, provide much-needed exercise and serve an important role in the NWT's recovery.
Stay Safe!

To be fair, the big question is how many events will go on and I do think that teams might play maybe half the tour events they would usually play. Slam teams, might lose less and might even be advantaged because they're already slam teams and there won't be a lot of events happening in the next year. Provincials and Nationals might be the difference between making the Pre-Trials and not making it. I wonder if Curling Canada will change the qualification format to allow more two-year ranking, because if the goal is to find the best 15 Canadian teams off of 3 bonspiels, it might not be what it was made for. Now, changing the rules in the middle of the qualifying process could be called unfair, but what do you do in case of a pandemic?

for me the scary thing is that the 2 biggest events outside the slams have been cancelled already. you know more events will follow. its about both the aspect of can events afford to be run or will they even be allowed to.
we could see a very localized year where teams play only within the province. european teams will have to stay in europe.

Yes, overseas teams won’t be able to come unless Canada lifts its 2 week quarantine. Same for the Asian teams. Of course these teams can decide to live in Canada during the season and do the quarantine but there may not be any events for them to curl in.
I have a feeling curling may not start until January.

Now that there is actual news about a possible vaccine, do we think it is feasible that all professional athletes will be compelled to take the vaccine to enable, international travel, competition, etc.? This only if and when it arrives, of course.

The Govt doesn't even have the guts to mandate common shots such as measles, mumps and the annual flu shot ( did you know 50% of Cdns don't get the flu shot?) so why would they make the covid vaccine mandatory? That would get the anti vaxxers knickers in a knot wouldn't it?

I was thinking, not mandatory, but a condition of regular international travel, for sport. Or a condition of proximal sport participation - eg, wrestling, mma. I realize they can not make it mandatory for the general public but maybe Olympians and other high level athletes - or even lower level athletes, would be compelled to be vaccinated if they want to participate. I don't know if it is a good idea, but it would be a way forward.

Things will never be the same. But things were never going to be the same.
Just as working capital is the lifeblood of any business, membership the lifeblood of any curling club, Grand Slam events have evolved over the years to become an elixir for the elite. With the cancellation of classic events such as the Shorty Jenkins, the Canad Inns and now four Grand Slams, all of which were scheduled for 2020, Canada's top competitive teams have been dealt a devastating blow.
As I alluded to in March, until a safe vaccine* is available for distribution to the general public, a process that could take until 2022 ( if ever), the sport of curling will face a world of hurt. In addition to following those guidelines which were recently announced by Curling Canada, to some extent the future success at both the club level and the Grand Slam competitive level may ultimately come down to a player not flunking his or her widely anticipated "Rapid" Covid -19 test. And if that doesn't become practicable it may not matter what guidelines are in place. There simply won't be any more games.
* Was surprised to see the results of recent polls in the US which indicated more than 1/3 wouldn't consider taking it. Presumably they intend to follow the illogical crap of that nutbar in the WH whose current curative is hydroxychloroquine combined with frequent injections of bleach. Well, good luck with that one folks.

Less than 50% of Cdns get the flu shot so why would they suddenly get a covid vaccine? There is really a strong antivaxxer lobby especially in the US and it is moving to Canada.

As soon as the general public in the US fully understand the implications of the Covid-19 infection/death rates compared to something like the seasonal flu , I suspect many will seriously reconsider their decision not to take a safe vaccine when (if) it becomes available.
That is not to say, however, I believe it's realistic to expect the current US percentage of 33% will fall to say 20% or less, but it should definitely drop. And I agree, the current Canadian attitude towards vaccinations is nothing to be proud of either.
Take care and stay safe.

You are exactly right. I'm a senior and I have never had a flu shot (or had the flu in 30 years) but I will take the covid one when it comes.
People need to understand that the flu shot is basically a scientific guess because the flu is always evolving. The experts sample the flu when it starts and then create the vaccine they think will work best as they need time to manufacture millions of doses. By the time it hits Canada the flu has changed and in past years the vaccines effectiveness has been variable. 2 or 3 years ago it was under 20%. The covid doesn't seem, to be changing like the flu (although it may be too early to tell)
As you point out, covid is more deadly than the flu so I will take the vaccine. Fauci says the first vaccine will probably only be 70% effective but that's good enough for me and I'll take my chances that Bill Gates isn't using it to implant a control chip in me as is being claimed by the people I see on the news at anti-everything rallies.

Canada Covid - 19 Alert
Yesterday I received a News Release from the office of the Premier of Ontario, as did all Ontario subscribers, encouraging us to download their Covid Alert app which has been specifically designed to notify users if and when they have been in proximity to another app user who has been confirmed to have Covid - 19.
This new Bluetooth-based Covid - 19 tracing app was developed in Canada and is scheduled to be rolled out across Canada - from sea to sea to sea- next week. To learn more about the objective, scope, how the app works, privacy analysis etc., google " COVID Alert: Exposure notification."
Don't know if our friends in the US are working on this same sort of things, but let's hope so.
In any case, seems to me as if Canada just scored an Eight Ender!
