Tirinzoni vs Homan in Women's final

By Meredith McCullum The second Grand Slam of the year is quickly coming to a close, but not before two nail biter finals are played in Nisku, Alberta. The Co-op Canadian Open winners will be decided played on Sunday in a repeat of the World Women's Curling Championship final earlier this year in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Homan, backed Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes, went 4-0 through round robin to take top seed in the quarterfinals. Homan's Ottawa based squad defeated Gimli, Manitoba's Kerri Einarson in a tight quarterfinal battle 7-5. In the semi they faced Korea's Seung-Youn Ha. Scores of three in both the first and fifth ends proved enough for the win as the teams shook hands with a final score of 6-2 through 5 ends that sent Homan's squad through to their second Grand Slam final of the season. WATCH Semifinal: Homan vs Ha Tracy Fleury said after the semi: "It's been a great event here in Nisku. The venue has been awesome. The crowds have been great and good ice. We're really enjoying our week here." Tirinzoni's squad - Alina Patz (fourth rocks), Selina Witschonke and Carole Howald - had a more difficult road to the final. They went 2-2 in round robin and had to win three games Saturday to quailfy for Sunday's championship game. They first defeated Japan's Yoshimura in the tiebreaker to book one of the last playoff spots. In the quarterfinal they faced second seed Stefania Constantini of Italy. They trailed 4-3 in the last end with hammer and were able to secure a huge four points with a runback on Alina Patz last shot to win the game. Then in semi they faced Korea's Eun-Jung Kim. The game was tied 4-4 after 7 and Tirinzoni were able to capitalize with last rock to score a point and earn the 5-4 victory, sending them through to the final. WATCH Semifinal: Tirinzoni vs Kim After the game Alina Patz said: "Obviously it was a grind today but we had a really good day. We played well just in time. We're happy to be in our position right now and are looking forward to a good final." The teams have faced each other too many times to count, including the World Women's Curling finals earlier this year where Homan won 7-5 to put Canada back on top of the world podium.
