Winnipeg's Team Brad Jacobs (Photo: Anil Mungal/GSOC) took one in an extra end to knock off Brendan Bottcher and record their second win of this year's Players' Championship. By: Cameron Sallaj In a pivotal game during Draw 11 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre, Brad Jacobs faced Brendan Bottcher in a battle of two 1-2 teams. With only the top six teams advancing to the playoff round, a win was crucial for both sides to stay alive. Team Jacobs, with third Reid Carruthers, second and spare Scott Howard and lead Connor Njegovan got on the board first with two in the second. After giving up three in the third, the team got two right back to put themselves back in the lead 4-3. The two rinks traded singles through five and six with Bottcher blanking the seventh, keeping the hammer down one into the eighth. There, the Alberta squad could only count one, sending the game into overtime. Facing three counters on his last, Jacobs made no mistake with his final draw, taking one and the 6-5 victory in Draw 11. The Manitoba rink, which is playing without second Derek Samagalski who is on paternity leave, have a tough test remaining as they face world champions Team Niklas Edin in their final game. Team Bottcher, now 1-3, need a win against Brad Gushue in their last game to have any chance of qualifying for a tiebreaker. Elsewhere, Team Rachel Homan (Ottawa, ON) secured qualification with an 8-3 downing of Team Jennifer Jones (Winnipeg/Altona, MB). The world champion rink stole three of their eight points and counted three in the seventh to end things early. Homan is now 4-0 while Jones falls to 1-3. Team Ross Whyte (3-1; Stirling, SCO) improved their playoff odds by defeating Team Yannick Schwaller (1-3; Geneva, SUI) 7-5. The Scotts took four in the second end and a later two in the seventh to reestablish their lead. In the final game of the draw, Team Gim Eun-ji (3-1; Uijeongbu, KOR) rallied late with deuces in six and eight to escape Team Xenia Schwaller (1-3; Zurich, SUI) 5-4. Facing three counters on her last, Gim executed the triple takeout to score the two and lift her team to victory. The Princess Auto Players' Championship resumes Friday with the first draw of the day at 7:30 AM Eastern Time.
