Team Canada secures second place in pool B
![]() Team Canada, (Photo: Michael Burns, Curling Canada) out of the St John's curling club in Newfoundland are in search of their third straight Brier title, fifth overall in Gushue's career. They started the week 2-2 with wins over Nova Scotia and Quebec and losses to Saskatchewan and Northwest Territories. They would then go on to win their final four games in a row, giving the team plenty of confidence in their game going into the playoff round. With their 6-2 record leaving them second place in pool B, team Gushue will play in a seeding game. The winner will move straight into the 1v2 playoff game, and the loser will face the third place team from pool A Friday night in an elimination game. Team Gushue has had an immense amount of success over the past eight years, starting with their first Brier win at home in 2017. Skip Brad Gushue and third Mark Nichols have played together since their junior days, and won the Olympics in 2006. Lead Geoff Walker and longtime second Brett Gallant joined the team in 2014. The foursome would go on to win 3 Canadian titles in 6 years, leading to 2 silver medals and one world championship. They also made a trip to the 2022 Beijing Olympics where they would win the bronze medal. In 2023, EJ Harnden took over at second. Although it was a bit of an adjustment for all four players, the team defended their title and once again finished silver at worlds, losing to a dominant Bruce Mouat out of Scotland. Team Canada has been strong all week, and with back to back silver medals at worlds, they are hungry to finish the job and stand atop the Canadian and World podium once again. Gushue takes on the first place team from pool A - the winner of Thursday evenings Bottcher vs Carruthers match - Friday morning. |
