Homan on Top Once Again

A story book season continues for Team Homan (Photo: Andrew Klaver, Curling Canada) as they win gold at the Scotties once again.

By Meredith McCullum

After a sensational week, Rachel Homan and her team out of the Ottawa Curling Club became Scotties Champions Sunday night. The final saw a back and forth battle between Homan and Jones, who was seeking a record 7th Scotties title. Homan had the lead through most of the game but Jones picked up a deuce to tie it up in the 9th end. Homan would score the single they needed in the 10th to become champions and secure their spot as team Canada at the upcoming World Championships in Sydney, Nova Scotia.

This win marks a fourth championship for Rachel Homan and Emma Miskew, but it has been a long grind getting back on top. Their last gold medal came all the way back in 2017 when the pair, along with Joanne Courtney and Lisa Weagle, won gold for Canada in Beijing.

Since then, Homan has come runner up at the Scotties three times, losing to a dominant team Einarson in each one. She has also given birth to three children, changing her perspective on the game. Her older two kids, along with Tracy Fleury's daughter and Sarah Wilkes' new baby were all watching at this year's Scotties, cheering on the team and creating extra special memories for the players.

For Tracy Fleury, this win marks her first Scotties title, and an opportunity to represent Canada on an international stage. Homan immediately embraced Fleury following the win and acknowledged in her interview how excited the team is to share this experience with her.

Fleury made it to the final of the Canadian Olympic Trials in 2022, losing on a last shot to Jennifer Jones. Though she had not previously made it to a Scotties final, she has been on the national stage for years, and this win marks a huge step in her career. She has embraced her role as third, backing Homan up with impressive shots and linecalls all season.

Team Homan has been dominant all year, going 38-5 through 7 events this season. They will look to ride this momentum into Worlds and bring home gold for Canada at the end of March.
