![]() The end of round robin action saw a back and forth battle between Manitoba's Kaitlyn Lawes and Northern Ontario's Krista McCarville. By Meredith McCullum The first half of the game was littered with singles. In the 6th end Lawes had all 8 of her rocks in play, but two great shots by McCarville secured them a steal and the lead. Lawes would bounce back in the 7th with a huge three points that turned the momentum and secured them the win. On the other sheets, Einarson finished 7-1 with a win over Curtis, Sturmay beat Brown to secure top spot in the pool and St-Georges beat Di Carlo. The result was a 5-way tie at a 4-4 record between Lawes, McCarvillle, St-Georges, Brown and Ackerman. With no tie breakers and a new playoff format this year, the final playoff position was decided by the last stone draw numbers over the course of the week. The Lawes rink were at the top of that list, so despite a rocky 1-3 start to the week, they snatched the third playoff berth from pool A and will head into the weekend with some momentum in their favour. Lawes team is still fairly new to the scene, and Kaitlyn herself is new to skipping. But her team is hungry for a big win and cannot be counted out yet. They carry an immense amount of experience at a national and world level between the four of them. Lawes and third Njegovan both thrive under big moment pressure and will be bringing their all into the playoff round. Like many other teams, there is a big family presence in their team Lawes cheering section this year. Kaitlyn Lawes, Jocelyn Peterman and Selena Njegovan all had babies last year, and they have all shared that having their kids watch them play is special and adds a new perspective to their game. For second Jocelyn Peterman, this Scotties is even more special, being in her hometown of Calgary. She is a head coach for the University of Calgary Dinos curling program and the players have been out cheering her on all week. Lawes and team Cameron will play Friday night at 6pm Mountain Time against the losers of the first playoff matches. Winners of these games will advance to the 3v4 page playoff game while the losers will be eliminated. |
