Edmonton's Karsten Sturmay won 7-2 over John Shuster (Duluth, Minnesota) to repeat as champions of the Ed Werenich Golden Wrench presented by The Lodge Sasquatch Kitchen in Tempe, Arizona. Sturmay with Kyle Doering at third, Glenn Venance and Kurtis Goller on the front end started with hammer, scoring 2 in the first end, then adding a steal in the second end and three more in the third end. Shuster scored 2 in the fourth end to trail 6-2 with Sturmay adding a single in the fifth end for the 7-2 win. Sturmay improved to 43 wins and 23 losses on the season, ranking 19th overall on the WCF World Team Rankings, while Shuster (#26) drops to 36-19. The win was Sturmay's first of the 2023/24 season, having reached the semifinals in 4 previous playoff appearances including the HearlingLife GSOC Tour Challenge Tier 2 event and the Pumps and Pressure Red Deer Curling Classic in November. In the semifinals, Sturmay defeated Toronto's John Epping 9-3 and Shuster defeated Rylan Kleiter of Saskatoon 8-5. In the quarterfinals, Epping defeated James Grattan of Oromocto, New Brunswick 5-4, Sturmay defeated Aaron Sluchinski of Airdrie, Alberta 7-2, while Shuster defeated Craig Kochan of Tempe 8-3, and Kleiter defeated Saskatoon's Dustin Kalthoff 5-4. Sturmay finished 3-1 in the 16-team triple knockout qualifying round. In their opening game, Sturmay defeated Elliott Mansell (Broomfield, Colorado) 10-2, then went on to lose 8-7 against Kalthoff. Sturmay responded with a 7-5 win over Steve Laycock (Swift Current, SK), then won 6-0 against Grattan in the B-qualifier game to reach the playoff round. Sturmay will next be on the ice at the Alberta Boston Pizza Cup in Hinton, joining Sluchinski and Kevin Koe as favourites to book their place into the Montana's Brier in Regina in March.
