Ackerman wins Saskatchewan Scotties

It took an extra end for Saskatoon's Skylar Ackerman to claim a 10-9 win over Nancy Martin (Martensville) in the Viterra Saskatchewan Scotties.

The women's provincial championship, hosted this week at the RecPlex in Tisdale featured the 12 best teams in Saskatchewan this season.

Represnting the Nutana Curling Club, Ackerman with Ashley Thevenot at third, Taylor Stremick and Kaylin Skinner on the front end came into the event as the top overall seed at #32 on the WCF World Team Rankings, just ahead of Martin who sat at #34.

Ackerman started with hammer, a benefit from winning the Page 1v2 game 7-6 over Martin on Saturday evening. Martin came back through the semifinal, winning 10-8 over Michelle Englot, where they stole 2 in the 10th end, then two more in the extra end.

In the final, Martin, with Lindsay Bertsch at third, Madison Kleiter at second and Krysten Karwacki at lead opened the scoring stealing 1 in the first end when Ackerman's draw came up short, then added another steal in the second end as Ackerman flashed the in-off for a potential three score.

Ackerman leveled out in the third end, drawing to score 3 after Martin wrecked on a guared with her last rock, then forced Martin to a single in the fourth end to get back to even with the hammer. In the fifth end, Ackerman made her draw to cut Martin down to a steal of one, then came the sixth end again drawing for a three point score to lead 6-4.

Ackerman held Martin to a single in the seventh end, but things got rocky in the eighth end where Ackerman's runback into the pocket was right leaving Martin with a steal of three to jump ahead 8-6. Not to be deterred, Ackerman got her three with another draw in the ninth end, then held Martin to a single point in the 10th end to force the extra end.

Ackerman faced two Martin counters with her last shot of the deciding end, made the hit and slight roll into the four-foot to score a single point and send the team to the national championships in Calgary in February.

The final was Ackerman's 50th game of the season, posting 36 wins against 14 losses in a strong season thus far. The Viterra Scotties title is Ackerman's fourth of the season, winning SaskTour events in Moose Jaw and at the Nutana in Saskatoon and finishing the tour season winning the SaskTour Women's Players Championship in Yorkton. Martin dropped the 25-27 on the season with the loss.

Ackerman finished 4-1 in the 12-team pools qualifying round. .In their opening game, Ackerman defeated Regina's Michelle Englot 7-4, then won 7-4 against Mandy Selzer (Balgonie) and 9-5 against Jana Tisdale (Regina). Ackerman went on to lose 10-5 against Robyn Silvernagle (North Battleford), then responded with a 14-6 win over Jessica Mitchell (Saskatoon) in their final qualifying round match.

Englot defeated Penny Barker (Moose Jaw) 9-6 in the Page 3v4 game, after winning an 8-4 tiebreaker decision over Jessica Mitchell.
