Jones wins Saville Shoot-Out


Jennifer Jones (Winnipeg, MB - photo: Anil Mungal, GSOC) wins the Saville Shoot-Out, defeating Rachel Homan (Ottawa, ON) 5-4 to win their first title as a team.

Jones with Mackenzie Zacharias at third, Karlee Burgess, Emily Zacharias and Lauren Lenentine on the front end take home the $6,000CDN first place cheque along with 48.750 world ranking points, while Homan receives $4,000CDN and 35.750 world ranking points for their second-place finish.

"It was a grind of eight games over 48 hours, and we're proud of how we competed against some very good teams this weekend," Jones wrote on their social media following the win.

"We have a long season ahead of us, and this was a nice step forward."

Jones joined the Zacharias foursome that won the 2020 World Junior Championship and played in the last two Scotties, including winning the Manitoba Scotties last December.

The team is a full five-player mix, as all 5-players are getting regular time on the ice and mixing and matching lineups.

Coming into the weekend, in 47 previous meetings between Jones and Homan, the Ontario-based skip holding a 25-22 record again Jones over her career, settinng the stage for a great final game at the Saville Centre in Edmonton.

Jones opened the scoring stealing 2 in the first end, then forced Homan to a single in the second end. After a blank end, Jones scored a single, then added a steal in the fifth end to lead 4-1.

Homan scored a single in the sixth end, then added a steal of 2 in the seventh end to send the game into the final end tied at 4.

Homan kept the pressure on in the final end, forcing Jones into a 4-foot runback for the win, which the veteran skip made for the win.

In the semifinals, Jones defeated Korea's Eun ji Gim 9-3 and Homan defeated Casey Scheidegger of Lethbrudge 6-4. Gim and Scheidegger earned $2,500CDN and 27.625 ranking points for their semifinal finishes. In the quarterfinals, Jones defeated University of Alberta Pandas Serena Gray-Withers 11-3, while Homan defeated Switzerlands's Raphaela Keiser 6-3. In the other 2 quarterfinals matches, Scheidegger won 7-5 over Yellowknife's Kerry Galusha, and Gim won 7-2 over Ikue Kitazawa of Japan.



Jones finished 5-0 in the 20-team Saville Shoot-Out qualifying round. In their opening game, Jones defeated Corryn Brown (Kamloops, BC) 9-3, then won 8-2 against Ashley Howard (Regina, SK) and 7-3 against Keiser. Jones won 8-5 against Kristie Moore (Sexsmith, AB), then won 6-5 against Gray-Withers in their final qualifying round match.
