McEwen, Dunstone to face off in semifinal
![]() Saskatchewan's Mike McEwen (photo: Andrew Klaver/Curling Canada) defeated Manitoba's Matt Dunstone 9-5 at the 2025 Montana's Canadian Curling Trials in Halifax, N.S. on Nov. 26. By Meredith McCullum In the final draw of round robin action at the 2025 Canadian Curling Trials, Mike McEwen - backed by Colton Flasch, Kevin Marsh and Daniel Marsh - routed Matt Dunstone 8-3. The win secured a 5-2 record and second place for 'Magic Mike'. "[Dunstone] really had our number for the last year and a half...So that was a big, big game for us," said McEwen after the win. "Good confidence booster going into tomorrow." With the loss, Dunstone - alongside teammates Colton Lott, E.J. Harnden and Ryan Harnden - would fall to 4-3 on the week and await the results of other games to determine his fate at the Trials. "There is still that chance there, we'll have to sit back, wait and see," said Dunstone after the loss. "Not fun to do, but it's what we're going to do. And if we get this opportunity, we're just going to leave it all out there tomorrow." ALberta's Kevin Koe lost 8-3 to Saskatchewan's Rylan Kleiter, eliminating any possibility of a three-way tie. So it all came down to the matchup between Alberta's Brad Jacobs and Newfoundland's Brad Gushue. It was a back and forth battle the whole way. Up 4-3 in the ninth end, Jacobs squeaked past a guard to sit 2, forcing Gushue to play a nose hit to only give up one and putting Jacobs up 5-3 heading into the final end. Jacobs slid deep on his final shot, giving Gushue a triple to score three, but he drove it through a port, giving up a steal of one and giving Jacobs the 6-3 win. With the loss, Gushue and Dunstone both finish the week with 4-3 records, and with having defeated Gushue 9-7 in an extra end earlier in the week, Dunstone moves on. The semifinal starts at 7 p.m. AST on Thursday evening, with the winner moving on to face Jacobs in a best-of-three final. Catch the games on TSN (Canada) and TSN YouTube (internationally).
