Skrlik beats world #1 Homan at Trials
![]() Kayla Skrlik (photo: Curling Canada) found her game and took down Rachel Homan 8-7 in an extra end at the Montana's Canadian Curling Trials in Halifax, N.S. on Nov. 23. By Meredith McCullum Kayla Skrlik's Calgary based rink did something on Sunday evening that no Canadian team has been able to do in 413 days: she defeated Rachel Homan. "It's a really good confidence booster of a win," said Skrlik after the game. "It's a long week. We're taking it one shot, one game at a time, and that really, really helped, especially against Rachel." Homan - backed by Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes - started with hammer, scoring a single in the first end. The teams traded singles in ends two and three, giving Homan the 2-1 lead heading into the fourth end. Skrlik, playing alongside teammates Margot Flemming, Ashton Skrlik and Geri Lynn Ramsay, put together a strong fourth end, scoring two points to take over the lead. The teams traded singles again in five and six. After a blank in seven, Homan was forced to another single point, making the score 4-4 after 8 ends. In the ninth, Homan wrecked on a guard on her final rock, giving Skrlik a double to score three points. She made no mistake, taking a 7-4 lead into the final end. Homan's squad locked in for the tenth, putting together a strong end to get those three points back and tie the game 7-7. The game went to an extra, Skrlik holding hammer. There was one Homan rock in the house and one tight centre guard in play on Homan's last shot. She drew around the guard but came up light, leaving Skrlik an open hit for the win. Skrlik made no mistake, making the nose hit and picking up her first win at the Trials. "It was a really good game, we knew the spot," said Skrlik on her final shot to win the game. "I was like 'don't overthrow it.'" Homan's squad out of Ottawa, Ont. has been the top team in the world for the last few seasons and is the favourite to win the Trials. They now prepare to face Selena Sturmay Monday at 2 p.m. AST as they look to bounce back from the loss. Skrlik now sits 1-2, still very much in contention only three games into the event. This first win will provide a much needed confidence boost as they head into the rest of the week, facing Kate Cameron in their next game Monday afternoon. In other draw 5 action, Christina Black's home team, based at the Halifax Curling Club, took down Kaitlyn Lawes, winning her first game of the event. In the ninth end, Black had the crowd roaring as she made a runback to score four points, giving herself a 7-3 lead, which would become the final score as Lawes was run out of rocks in the tenth end. "We had a very tough schedule to start," said Black, reflecting on facing Kerri Einarson and Rachel Homan in her first 2 games at the Trials. "Before we ever played our first game, it's like 'okay what's our goal?' And I said after Sunday, I want one win. And we got one win, so yeah, it's good." In the other two games, Kerri Einarson routed Corryn Brown 9-1 to stay the only undefeated team through three games, and Selena Sturmay got back in the win column with a 12-5 victory over Kate Cameron. The next draw for the women is Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. AST. All scores, standings and event information can be found at curlingzone.com. |
