Thevenot Stays Alive at Olympic Pre-Trials
![]() Saskatchewan's Ashley Thevenot (Photo: Curling Canada) defeated Alberta's Myla Plett to move to a 3-3 record at the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials in Wolfville, Nova Scotia. By Connor Simms, #43 World-Ranked Ashley Thevenot with Stephanie Schmidt at third, Taylor Stremick and Kaylin Mattern on the front end, look to claim the final spot in Halifax for the Canadian Olympic Trials. They have had a bit of a slow start to the season, missing the playoffs in both the Saville Grand Prix and the Saville Shootout. This week, they are at the Canadian Olympic Pre-Trials. The four of them are making their debuts at this event. In their sixth game, they took on Myla Plett (Edmonton, AB), needing a win to stay in the mix. Plett won the opening game, drawing to the button for the hammer. After a first end blank, Thevenot stole 2 in the second end to take an early lead. Plett responded in the third end, scoring 2. Thevenot scored a single in the fourth end, then added a steal in the fifth end, and added another steal in the sixth end. Plett scored 2 in the seventh end, Thevenot responded in the eighth end, scoring 2. Plett scored a single in the ninth end, Thevenot scored a single in the tenth end for the 8-5 win. Thevenot now sits at 3-3. In their opening game, Thevenot lost 7-2 to Kayla MacMillan (Victoria, BC), then responded with a 9-5 win over Nancy Martin (Wakaw, SK). Thevenot went on to lose 7-2 against Beth Peterson (Winnipeg, MB). Thevenot responded with an 8-7 win over Danielle Inglis (Ottawa, ON). Thevenot went on to lose 11-5 against Selena Sturmay (Edmonton, AB). They are now in a 3-way tie for third place with Scharf and Plett. Since they hold the head-to-head with Plett, a win against Scraf in their final round robin game will clinch them a spot in the playoffs. That game will be played tonight at 7:00 pm Atlantic Time (AT). The format for this event is an 8-team round-robin, with each team playing every other team once. The top team at the end of the round robin will get a spot in the final, while the second and third seeds will play in a semi-final. From there, the winner of the 2v3 game and the top seed will face off in a best two-of-three final. The winner will advance to compete in the 2025 Canadian Olympic Trials in November.
