Johnston finished 11-6 in the 18-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Johnston lost 5-4 to Zach Warkentin (Thunder Bay, ON), then responded with a 7-2 win over Chris Silver (Thunder Bay, ON). Johnston won 6-3 against Krista McCarville (Thunder Bay, ON), then won 6-3 against Ben Mikkelsen (Thunder Bay, ON). Johnston went on to lose 4-2 against Gary Weiss (Thunder Bay, ON). Johnston lost 6-2 to Claire Dubinsky (Thunder Bay, ON) where Johnston responded with a 7-3 win over Robyn Despins (Thunder Bay, ON). Johnston went on to lose 7-4 against Bryan Burgess (Thunder Bay, ON). Johnston lost 8-7 to Myles Stevens (Thunder Bay, ON) where Johnston responded with a 9-5 win over Ron Rosengren (Thunder Bay, ON). Johnston went on to lose 7-5 against Trevor Bonot (Thunder Bay, NO). Johnston responded with a 7-6 win over Denis Malette (Thunder Bay, ON). Johnston won 9-0 against Andrew Sinclair (Thunder Bay, ON), then won 8-2 against Al Hackner (Thunder Bay, ON) and 7-2 against Rob Skinner (Thunder Bay, ON). Johnston won 7-1 against Ashley Palmer (Thunder Bay, ON), then won 6-2 against Adams Jr. in their final qualifying round match.
