Walstad finished 3-1 in the 20-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Walstad defeated Eddy Mercier (Lyon, FRA) 9-2, then won 8-3 against Switzerland's Raphael Moix and 6-5 against Jaap van Dorp (Zoetermeer, NED). Walstad went on to lose 6-4 against Marc Pfister (Adelboden, SUI) in their final qualifying round match.
