To advance to the championship game, Appelman won 7-1 over Mark Johnson (Edmonton, AB) in the semifinals of the 2009 Meyers Norris Penny Charity Classic in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada; and won 7-6 over Dean Ross (Calgary, AB) in the quarterfinals. of the 2009 Meyers Norris Penny Charity Classic in Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada;
 
Appelman finished 4-1 in the 32-team qualifying round. . In their opening game, Appelman defeated Brad Heidt (Kindersley, SK) 1-0, then went on to lose 4-2 against Ross. Appelman responded with a 9-5 win over Jamie King (Edmonton, AB). Appelman won 7-5 against Chris Schille (Edmonton, AB), then won 5-1 against Jason Gunnlaugson (Beausejour, MB) in their final qualifying round match.
 
With their runner-up finish at the Meyers Norris Penny Charity Classic, Appelman take home 13.750 world rankings points along with the $6,000CDN prize. For week of the event schedule, Appelman did not improve upon their best events, remaining at th place on the World Ranking Standings with total points. Appelman ranks th overall on the Year-to-Date rankings with points earned so far this season.
