Changes need to Manitoba Provincial Cresting Policies!
You thought that photo radar was a cash grab in Manitoba, do you know that CurlManitoba changed their Cresting Policy this season? Did the players get any say in the matter?
General Information
1. CurlManitoba mandates that all on ice clothing must display the Title and Presenting sponsor crests at all times.
2. All uniforms must have a blank 4 inch by 4 inch square on the left chest and the right chest of all on ice garments including where sponsorship crests are not available.
3. CurlManitoba has three cresting options for the 2015-2016 season.
4. Any same team of Junior, Men or Women will pay a maximum cresting fee of $500.00.
5. All sponsorship must be submitted with a picture with the attached form.
Arena Events (Scotties Tournament of Hearts and the Viterra Championship) Option 1: A team is allowed to display NO sponsorship BUT must display the titles and presenting sponsor crests. There is no fee.
OR
Option 3: A team may wear their bonspiel attire according to the cresting policy AND the title and presenting sponsor crests. Fee $500.00
Club Events (Juniors, Seniors, Masters, 4-Person Mixed Championships)
Option 2: A team is allowed to display sponsorship on their sleeve and back of all garments as per the cresting policy and MUST display the title and presenting sponsor crests where available. There is no fee.
OR
Option 3: A team may wear their bonspiel attire according to the cresting policy AND the title and presenting sponsor crests (where available). Junior Fee $300.00; Senior and Master fee $150.00; 4-Person Mixed fee $500.00

OPTION 1: Televised Arena Events At all televised arena events no advertising is allowed unless the team has paid the required cresting fee. The title and presenting sponsor crests are mandatory.
b) TEAM SPONSOR CRESTING shall not be in conflict with the Event Title Sponsor or any other sponsors CurlManitoba deems to be in conflict

So this means that any team playing in the Manitoba Scotties or the Viterra Championships won’t be able to wear any team sponsorship advertising without paying the $500 fee. This changed from previously, as last year teams were able to wear 4” x 4” of advertising on each sleeve and a 8” x 4” sponsor on the back or pay the $500 for unlimited sponsors (within the cresting rules)
Looking ahead to the Viterra Championships… most rural teams wear team sponsorship that includes seed, grain and fertilizer companies, there might be conflict issue here!
Why is this fee $300 for Juniors, $150 for Seniors & Masters, $500 for Mixed and $500 for Women’s and Men’s necessary?
Other provinces do not charge fees for the players to wear their team sponsorships!
Last year, the Safeway Championships in Brandon reported…
Figures from the five-day Provincial Men's Curling Championship show a $110,000 profit, which will be split between the Brandon Curling Club and the Keystone Centre.
Last year, the Scotties in Winkler reported …
John Neufeld and Louis Tanguay, co-chairs of the tournament, announced profits of $148,000.
In addition to all these announced profits, Curl Manitoba sells sponsorship packages to the sponsors of all these events that bring in thousands of dollars! Rumour has it the major sponsor of the men’s provincial is in for between $50&$100K per year! Not to mention all of the minor sponsors that also contribute thousands of $$ to these events.
So the question is!
Why does Curl Manitoba need to charge the curlers these fees to wear team sponsorship? The curlers themselves work hard to find sponsors to help them with team expenses to compete? Curlers need team sponsorship, it is almost impossible for teams to compete on the Manitoba or World Curling Tours without sponsorship. And if they make it to the Provincial Championship, they go there on their own dime, hotel rooms, food, travel expenses, and missed time at work.
The curlers do not receive any compensation from the event or Curl Manitoba to help with expenses. And yet the curlers are taxed another $500 to compete in the men’s or women’s provincials for wearing any form of team sponsor advertising.
Earlier this season, a petition went around a few competitive events that included juniors, men’s, women’s and seniors. The petition included over 250 signatures and was submitted to Curl Manitoba for review. The petition was submitted quickly after only a few events so that Curl Manitoba could review the policy in time for the 2016 Provincial Championships. Some clubs asked to have the petition posted for club members to sign, however due to time constraints the petition was submitted after a only few events.
Curl Manitoba has not yet released a published response to the curlers that signed this petition. Teams are being forced to pay the fees as part of their Event Participation Agreements and Cresting Agreements for all Provincial Championships.
I thought photo radar was a money grab, but at least I can slow down at those intersections. The Curl Manitoba Cresting Agreement taxes the curlers unnecessarily, why charge the players to compete, especially when the events are turning large profits!
In the mean time here is thought…
