Muirhead can't defend her title
Rather odd decision by the Scottish curling powers...but now Canada has a chance

It's the same for Canada. The team that wins the Olympic spot can not go to the Scotties or Worlds. Also a conflict with timing.

It is pretty ridiculous if you ask me. I don't see why these countries cant juggle the calendar for that year to allow the defending champions the opportunity to participate.

I think writing Rachel in is a mistake. Our Olympic reps are almost never who they are "supposed" to be.

Still - I think the world champion should have a chance to defend her title?
Surely a schedule change could be made to accomodate this? From what I've seen Eve is way above almost any other Scottish (or for that matter world) team.
As for Canada, well hopefully Homan gets a chance to go to Sochi...we need someone to break the gold medal drought!

It's great in theory to say that a team should be able to compete in both Brier/Scotties and Olympics. But think for a second - with the Olympics comes a ton of commitments and obligations. Could they really handle the sheer time and energy required to with both? I personally think it's correct to have the team representing us at the Olympics focus solely on that competition.

anette norberg proved in 2006 that teams can definitely do both...although maybe that team was an acception

It is bit different in Sweden than in Cda. Norberg would not have needed to take two weekends off for zones and regions, then a full week for provincials, then another 10 days for nationals just to qualify for worlds. And that is on top of a week for Trials and possibly another 5-6 days for Pre-Trials if you are not one of the first 6 qualifiers.
The Swedish teams are hand picked up Peja Lindholm well before the Worlds and Olympics.

Very succinct and accurate assessment of the situation Art.
btw - what are Rachel & team's thoughts about abdicating their "Team Canada" spot should they win the trials?
(I imagine they might not want to take a public position)
Part 2 - what are your thoughts?
I can only speak for part 2: The team will either be Team Cda in Sochi or Montreal. Nice spot to be in.
Speaking of Montreal, I hope all those spectators who cannot go all the way to Sochi, will visit Montreal for the Scotties, particularly those in the west who have never been to Montreal. Great city, but we need curlers to come and support this event.

I was very specific to say Brier/Scotties for this very reason!!

And I would think the same in Scotland, I don't think Eve has to compete as much as the Canadian teams to win Scotland.

In Scotland, Eve has to play a National Championship similar to the Scotties, an 8 team round robin with Page playoffs. I've been to this event twice doing statistics and it's still a grind. The competition is thinner in Scotland, but there are teams that can beat her and she needs to be playing well to not slip up.
It's not like it's been a cakewalk for Muirhead over the years though either, as last year was the first time she went undefeated in Round Robin, but still lost Page 1v2 game:

Hannah Fleming is another very good young team out of Scotland and was still a Junior as of last year, losing the World Juniors Final:

They've been in contention in the Scottish Nationals for the last 3 years, all as a Junior team as well. The future is bright in Scotland.

Gerry, how many stages would they have to go through to qualify for the Scottish Nationals? Of course, in Eve's case, it is easy to get time off from work and school when you are being paid to curl and don't have to work or go to school.
