Benoit Schwarz
get to see more of this Phenom.. close to best shot-maker in the world...
Like Kauste and all his hairdos... they are a good Team
but Team De Cruz are my picks ( well besides Kyle Smith)..and hope to see them up against Edin in the final...
( off topic but Thomas Ulsrud's throat must be clear by now...the way he gargles his loud calls)
great curling.. we are lucky..

yeah, benoit schwartz is amazing. the suisee have favored him from a young age, making him the alternate for sven michel most of the time.
he is a tremendous talent, can make any shot in the book. hits used to be a weakness for him but he has improved greatly on them. plus he has ice in his veins, nothing bothers him and he's afraid of any shot.

well switzerland turned that round robin game around. drawing for a 10-4 lead in the 8th
game would be over
schwarz makes the draw and the fins shake hands
congrats switzerland on making the final.was an up and down week but they are guaranteed at least silver now. although, to be honest they got a major does of luck to even be here in this position in the game against sweden

italian girls with a 3 point lead in the 10th end. in a strong position to get that world group playoff with norway.
what would people think of the europeans adding 2 teams and becoming a 12 team field like worlds?

meanwhile denmark beats austria and will play italy in the world group playoff. really shouldnt have expectd anything different. but austria really gave a good account of themselves. i will be interested to see how this young team can do in A next year

Logan Gray (high level Scottish curler) and Alison Walker (Scottish Sports Commentator covering many sports). Sander Rolvag (high level Norwegian curler) has also been on many of the broadcasts this week as well.
At times it's difficult to tell Sander and Logan apart.

Norway going through the round robin at 9-0 FOUR games clear of everyone else and with one loss their chances at gold are gone.
It's times like these when I'm very thankful for the page playoff system.

yeah, it is absolutely ridiculous. norway were by far and away the best team there this weak but 1 loss and suddenly their chances at gold are gone. very stupid way of doing things. I am not a fan of this at all.
can you imagine the uproar there would have been on here and in canadian media if jones had went 9-0 in the round robin in socchi for example and then lost the semi and her chance at gold.
this system is flawed and needs never should have been put into place here

Finland
congrats to Oona kauste and her rink. it was a great moment to see her break into tears when she found out she'd won bronze. Its also nice to see that bronze went to a team that it actually meant something to.Even better was to see aku embracing his sister. Very happy for them. believe it is the first ever medal for a finnish womens team anywhere
in the world playoff denmark men and italian women win game 1.
however now lene nielsen has finished 4th 5 years in a row at this event and that has to hurt. this team is great during round robins but now, combined in her career nielsen has never won a match in the playoffs, not one.
I do feel bad for them , its got to suck to lose here after starting so well but their wild inconsistencies cost them again

Same system the olympics use. And everyone going into the event knows the format, Ulsrud would be the last to whine about the loss in the semi.

WCF is looking to go back to the 1v4, 2v3 semifinals again as it's also whats used in the Olympics. Expect to see it happen at the World Championships eventually as well.

whatever, i think its a pretty stupid system to have in place, and just because its used at the olympics doesnt mean it should be used everywhere.
really its not even about saving time, its eliminating 1 extra game so to me the change is pointless.
anyway..
norway i think will rebound and win game 2 tomorrow and i can see that best of 5 going all the way but i see denmark winning in 3 straight
think sweden will win, unfortunately and russia will beat scotland

It's the Olympics that has it wrong, not the rest of the world.

The two sides that make sport great: the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat.
Have to feel bad for Lene, especially this year. Not only being at home, but unlike other years, she actually had the better team in the bronze medal game, but you gotta execute when it counts. She must be developing a complex about 4th place though.
Gotta give credit to Kauste for making that pressure draw.

Do you expect Curling Canada to ever go this way too?
I do get the appeal of this format. It makes more sense to casual fans (after all, most sports use this playoff format), the bronze medal game makes sense again and it does add drama. However, it does seem wrong that Norway isn't in the final after the week they've had.
I'm gonna throw out a couple ideas that will never happen:
First place gets a bye to the final. Second plays third in a semi. Winner to the final, loser plays fourth place team in the bronze medal game. Three playoff teams is reasonable in a ten team division. Fourth place would be a bummer, but teams in these events do seem to care about the opportunity to play for bronze. Tiebreakers may make this scenario not work as well. It would be similar to the page format where the loser of the semi might have to play the team they just beat to win bronze.
Scenario 2: In the event of tied records amongst the second/third/fourth place teams (wouldn't be fair otherwise), the first place team gets to pick their opponent. Perhaps Norway wouldn't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but I'm sure they'd prefer it to having to play Niklas Edin in the semis.

Playoff Format
The Page systems gives the top two teams a significant advantage over the next two, since winning the title from third or fourth place requires winning one more game than winning from first or second, and also requires defeating every other team in the playoffs
I like the idea of the Bronze game later in the same day as the SF... no waiting around to finish off the event

I don't see a problem with the system. You play the rr to get top 4 (playoff position). Then its do or die. Must win the right games. I don't know of any other sports that allow you to lose a "round" of playoffs and still advance???

The only problem is that the best team is less likely to win the event. How much of a problem is an open question. This is always a balancing act. If you had each playoff matchup take the form of a best of seven series, as they do in other sports, there is an extremely good chance the best team will have won the event. However, that would take away a lot of the drama, not to mention being impractical. The page playoff, or some sort of system with a bye (which is used in football, for example) would improve the chances of the top team in the standings winning, and those teams are usually the better teams. But, as I say, a bit less drama.
