Brier 2018
Just had to start a thread for the Brier. It starts on Friday and not much has even been said.
But then again, I don't have much to say either - just wanted to see a thread started.
Go Manitoba!

only 2 of those really count as new blood. if you're putting mcewen and gushue in there you'd have to include epping

Only Gunnlaugson OR McEwan will make the Brier...they have to play off against each other for the CTRS position.

He's not eligible. Top 2 teams on CTRS not already qualified play. In the Scotties post it was suggested to allow Koe and Homan to be the wild card for NEXT year as the were ineligible this year...... if their teams stay together.

Koe is above both McEwen and Gunnlaugson

Above yes but deemed ineligible by Curling Canada. The team that wins the trials is ineligible to compete provincially and no longer eligible to compete at the Scotties or Brier. At all.
That's why let them be the wild card next year because it's not their fault they weren't allowed to compete.

Team McEwen
There is no team in curling that deserves a win like this more than team McEwen. After losing so many finals in the Manitoba playdowns, and so many finals on the WCT tour they have paid their dues and then some.
Yes it is hard on Team Gunner as they didn't deserve to lose. That's the nature of sport though, only one can survive. Something Team McEwen knows better than most.

Can someone explain how McEwen stole one in the EE for those of us who did not have TV access?
Also, need to give Manitoba Legend some credit for calling this one...

My guess is that he's under 80% - and the game goes down to last bricks, possibly extra end.

had to draw to the button for the win and was a bit heavy.

Percentages were incredibly high. Gunner wins even though he loses - plays a tough game on national TV and almost topples a monster.
Big difference:
Gunner had two low percentage curlers in the lead and Gunner himself (74%)
McEwen actually pulled thru with an incredible 93% game - never even scored a deuce - had to steal in the extra.
B.J. was the only weakness but torqued it up in the extra!
If McEwen is semi-healthy this team should make playoffs - can't see them out-smarting or out rock-positioning Gushue (for one) but they can hang with everyone else! GREAT ADD TO THE FIELD - - - !!!
You are smart enough to know that percentages do not mean a lot. It is the right show at the right time. You could be at 50% and make the last brick for a win......
They ma y help curlers when scouting the other team better shots, but really mean nothing in a game.
The right shot at the right time!

Gunner missed 2 shots for the win. His last and one to score 3.

Actually, his weight was good enough to score - and thus win. I freeze-framed it when the rock stopped, and if they would have taken 6 inches less ice - or if the rock had curled 6 inches more - they would have won, as the weight would have caught a good part of the button.

As usual in the animal kingdom, the superior team just had to patiently wait for the weaker team to implode. Gunner did that in the 9th and 10th end.
While Homan for the most part (Olympics excepted) learned she cannot only have the hit shot in her arsenal, Gunner is still a one hit wonder.

i'm glad mike got through. much like chelsey he has lost so many big finals including 2 this year. i'll be pulling for him or epping to win the brier this year.
jason..i don't know about this whole format. seems insane to me that someone that didn't even make the playoffs in his provincials had a second chance to get in. he does still rely to much on the hitting game. however he does seem to have found a team that he gels with. he's bounced around teams a lot but i hope this one sticks together for a while

Trouble with your theory is he took the ice he took and for that ice he was heavy by a tiny bit...you don't get to retake ice to match the weight thrown except in your theory..

I’m wondering what Team Gunn’s thoughts on Jason’s first in the ee? What good would have come if he would have made what they called?

So pleased that McEwen won, so we don't have to endure Gunnlaugson's "i got this" attitude on the ice and the unnecessary weight he fires at everything.

Gushue just burned a rock. I'm waiting for the purists to flame "why was the rock not removed?"

Poor BC...what happened, someone's wife went into labour so the guy left? Can't believe this team beat Jim Cotter
