Olympic Men's
Starts Wednesday (well, in US time at least, I think in Korea it actually happened like a week and a half ago...I never have gotten the hang of the Date Line...).
Will this be the year Shuster gains Olympic Glory?
How will Hamilton shake off a questionable performance in Mixed?
Will we actually see a single Lead Stone Delivery during the entire tournament?

I definitely think so. He's hungry, the team is hungry, and they've had success on the world stage. I think they have the right mix of skills, team chemistry, and attitude to bring home some hardware. I have them pegged for Bronze.
I think he'll shake it off just fine. Matt comes off as a pretty laid-back guy, and he seems to take on the role of team "cheerleader", keeping their spirits up when they're struggling...I have no doubt he'll do the same for himself.
On TV? Not a chance. Not only are almost all of the matches tape-delayed, they're also cut down to two-hour time slots. I expect heavy editing for sure.

2-2 after 4...which is good for a tie for 3rd at the moment.
This is a *weird* event...aside from two very obvious class teams, everyone else seems like who beats who is a spin of the wheel. Shuster could be in the Bronze game, or they could end up 10th.
Should be good for ratings, which is really all NBC, and transitorily the USOC and USCA really care about...but a medal round showing would be lovely.
On the plus side, Shuster's been in weirdspiels before, and seems to come through.

annnnnnnnd once again, the USA falls flat on their faces.
As to TV ratings, don't get too comfortable. In time, audiences can be rather fickle.
If USA curling is deemed a "joke" meme like handball, then it's lights out.
We've gone an entire generation with not that much to show for except a few distant world medals and a lone Olympic bronze 12 years ago.
We are the Cleveland Browns of curling.

coming in at 2-4 they need to win tonight or any chances of a medal are over. however think 2 things will work in their favor:
1. koe is coming off the back of 2 losses so maybe confidence a little shaken
2. shuster should have beaten koe at worlds a couple years ago and always gives him good battles. they know they can hang with koe . they have a shot

The win over Canada does a few things...
1. Still Alive. 3-4 with 2 to play...5-4 is a possibility, which would get into the tiebreaker hairball with a little help from the outside.
2. Keeps NBC's interest alive. Frankly, NBC doesn't *need* the US in the medal round, they need them competitive through the Round Robin, and if one of the two breaks through to medals, woot...but a close 5th place is adequate for NBC's purposes. And since both genders are still alive...NBC is happy as a clam.
3. Probably keeps the USOC off of the USCA's back. Medals are nice, but likely 4th-6th place finishes if they don't make the medals can be pointed to as "See, better!", particularly if either of our teams manages to do well at Worlds...and with Men's on US ice, it's quite possible.

Agreed Alan,
If the USA finishes in a "respectful showing", makes a tie breaker or even medals, the USCA can go to the "malcontents" and tell them to zip it.
USCA will double down and lock down the HPP.

Overnight the situation has improved dramatically...
The USA is 4-4 with one to play, and everything to play for.
A win over GB clinches at worst a 3 way tie for 4th with Switzerland and Japan (GB would get 3rd due to a 3-1 record between 5 tied teams at 5-4, Norway would fall to 7th due to a 1-3 record in those tied teams).
The 3 way tie would *I BELIEVE* be resolved by ranking the three teams with DSC and then the best two play off for that 4th berth. I do not know the DSC results to this point.
Interestingly, the WCF rules indicate no tiebreakers to be held, but the Olympic Schedule has a Tiebreaker draw, so I am *assuming* that last year's "Only 1 TB draw" rules is in effect, hence the ranking above.
That's a pessimistic analysis, based on Japan winning their last two and Norway doing so as well.
And the situation could get even better with a little help. *IF* Denmark were to hit above their weight and upset Canada, then a possibility exists for a 6 way tie for second.
And if you apply the TB rules, the US takes the #2 seed (3 wins in the melee between Switzerland, GB, Japan, USA, Norway, and Canada. Japan and Norway drop out as they have 2 and 1 win in that group respectively....then between the four remaining tied teams for second, the US is UNDEFEATED...therefore gets the #2 clean. ) Switzerland, GB, and Canada tied for 3rd, I believe DSC awards 3rd and the remaining two playoff for 4th.
Trust me, NBC is quite content.

Scratch that...Italy just reached up from the grave and yanked Norway down to the depths...
The 5-4 hairball with a Canadian win would now be a 4 way tie for 3rd.
There's two ways it could be resolved, I'm not sure which way they are going for the Olympics.
If it's per the WCF rules currently in force, the US is in the playoffs as the #3 seed (2 wins in Switzerland, GB, Japan, US, Japan and Switzerland drop out due to only 1 win in that grouping, then US defeats GB in H2H)
If it's the "One draw of tiebreakers", then it would be the US vs either Switzerland or Japan.
And the Hairball with Canada losing to Denmark would leave the USA in clear 2nd (3 wins between Switzerland, GB, Japan, USA, and Canada, Japan drops to 6th due to one win in that grouping, others fight for 3-4).
In short....US vs GB is, officially, Huge.

Best-case scenario would be Japan losing with US winning.
US takes clear third based on head-to-head versus Switzerland, and GB,
If that happens AND Canada loses to Denmark, then US in clear second. I know this technically is the best case scenario, but I'm being realistic...with the way Canada is playing right now vs the way Denmark has been playing I don't see this happening. Japan should beat Korea, but I could see an upset there. Not likely, but possible.

I dunno....
It's Korea's last game of the Olympics, against Japan (a national rival), in front of the home crowd...
On the one hand, the emotions could swell Korea to a massive win.
On the other hand...curling isn't a sport where "The crowd surge of energy" is always a good thing...throwing too hard is bad sometimes...so it's a double edged sword at best.

The new WCF rules regarding no tiebreakers was with 6 teams making playoffs.

Concur...
So it appears that The Rules are not seen as adequate to The Biggest Stage The Game Is Played on.
Frankly, it's argument #1 to rewrite the rules, IMO.

Yep, if there is any kind of tie, there will be tiebreak game(s).
At this link is a .pdf with all possible scenarios:

Never thought that John and the guys would be in the gold medal game. What an awesome run they’re having after getting straightened out after Norway.

A Bronze and a 4th in Worlds the last 2 years, and now at least a Silver at the Olympics.
With a self formed and (initially) self funded team that the HPP excluded from the program originally 3 years ago.
I admit, I've only got a decade or so of history to go off of, but I'm hard pressed to think of a more important curler to the US than John Shuster.
