2021 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship
While the Women's is going on, some of teams that will be competing in Mixed Doubles have just finished a tournament in Tallinn, EST.
https://worldcurlingtour.org/md/event/225
Final https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SbsYQ3sKdIc
Ezekh/Stukalskiy won gold. Ezekh will be the female half of RCF. She has been to 15 World Women's and 4 Olympics, a total of 343 games recognized by WCF (Jennifer Jones, for reference, has 99).
https://results.worldcurling.org/Person/Details/469
--------------------------------------
Silver was Palancsa/Kiss, which will be HUN. They're two time world champions in 6 attempts.

2015: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lyRkSox9UA&t=1h31m15s
--------------------------------------
Bronze is Paulová(Hájková)/Paul, which will be CZE. They've won a bronze in 5 attempts.
--------------------------------------
Perret/Rios (SUI) are silver medalists from 2018 OWG. Rios is a 3x champion, once with Perret.
--------------------------------------
Peterson/Polo (USA) are bronze medalists from 2016, their first try.

Gill/Hewitt (AUS) were a surprise in 2019, losing the bronze medal game to Christensen/Shuster (USA), in a game where they had definite chance of winning.

Correction: Wikipedia was wrong. 2021 Russian champions Ezekh/Krasikov will not be RCF. It will be 2020 Russian champions Moskaleva/Eremin instead.
Official complete roster:
https://worldcurling.org/events/wmd...?pageType=teams
It will be interesting, borderline potential scandalous, if ENG meets SCO early in playoff. Only SCO can qualify GBR for Olympics. If ENG eliminates SCO, it also basically kills its own Olympic dream.
//edit: CORRECTION! Top 3 teams from each pool makes playoff, and 7 teams get the direct berth, so no, there's no scandal. 2019 format was very different (48 teams, playoff starts with Round of 12), but in 2021, if SCO makes the playoff, GBR qualifies for the Olympics, regardless of ENG.

I just found out that Peterson/Polo had to get out of tiebreaker in 2020 US Nationals to win it. Very gritty performance.
Games on YouTube:

//edit: and they didn't even qualify for the championship if they weren't handpicked by some committee to fill the one wildcard spot!

Schedule
If top 3 in each section make the playoffs (that is 6 teams) and 7 go to Olympics, how does the schedule work?
It lists Qualifying games and Olympic qualifying games before the semifinals but I cannot find a full explanation of the format.

I take back what I said about ENG vs SCO not being scandalous. If this were to happen in playoff, then no, it's not scandalous, but this matchup could also happen outside playoff, to determine the 7th spot. Who knows what will happen in that case.
There's also all sorts of weird scenarios, e.g. if neither SCO nor ENG qualified for playoff, but ENG has a chance to battle for the 7th spot... except that ENG can't qualify GBR for the Olympics anyway, so what's the point of that battle?
The cleanest scenario, of course, is for SCO to climb to Top 3 in Pool A.
Of course, if top 6 includes both ENG and SCO, then we really only have 5 countries securing their Olympic spots. Who knows what happens then.

ENG SCO
It's awkward but a better solution than the same scenario in Football (soccer) where GBR ends up with no representation at the Olympics with England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland having seperate associations that cannot agree on how to resolve the conflict.
If England really becomes competitive at curling it will be interesting to see how this becomes resolved in the long run. It is only a problem in a couple of sports because other sports where this (historically based) separation occurs (Rugby, Cricket, etc.) do not appear in the Olympics.

I could be wrong, but I believe the Fowlers were/are part of Team GB elite prospects training program. There was a period when they were touring together with the SCO teams (2018 Stirling/Kingan and 2019 Aitken/Andrews).

Anna Fowler has recorded 129 WCF games (it will be more by the end of this event). Jennifer Jones, for reference, only has 99.

An Aside from MD
Watching the WCF you tube broadcasts today, I don't know if it's just me, but there seems to be a hate on for Canada. Many posters in the "chat" go out of their way to belittle, insult, purposely rile up, and anger Canadian viewers, almost like a sport. And what's worse there are many Canadian posters that pile on. I don't get it. Team Canada first. If you don't like the team representing us, that's fine. But to pile on with the idiots from around the world is reprehensible. I watched the CAN- ESP game and couldn't believe how bad it was. Even the Japan-Estonia game was the same. Crapping on Canada and we weren't even playing. I know your mother taught you if you have nothing nice to say, say nothing at all. And if she didn't, shame on her.
Yes I know sometimes I get a little sarcastic, and attempt humour, but never attack Team Canada. I just don't get it.
Here endeth today's rant.

The broadcasters themselves are fine. It's more so the people watching, leaving chat comments that I was talking about.

Generally speaking, YouTube chats and comments are notoriously toxic. WCF does have an army of moderators who make sure people are behaving, delete suggestions of VPN to get around geoblocking, etc.
For the most part it's tolerable, especially after you build up your block list to ignore the trolls, and maybe to ignore those who aren't chatting in English (I'm sorry, but that's the only language I chat in, so I block all the Russians/Koreans/Japanese/etc., just to keep myself sane).
Occasionally you get guest curlers on chat. Chelsea Carey had been on a few times, and was always gracious answering questions.
You can also disable live chat entirely and just watch curling.
For what it's worth, I don't see much hate for Canada (but keep in mind that I have already blocked a bunch of people at this point). There's a lot of international users in the chat, so maybe they don't love Canada as much as Canadians do, but that's understandable.

I see a trend where nations who have had historical success at mixed doubles with specialists (Russia, Hungary, China, Finland, New Zealand) are giving way to traditional powers who are now sending reps with international experience in the four person game. Maybe it was a matter of time before the depth of the traditional powers made an impact. We have seen this with other sports (volleyball to beach volleyball, rugby union to rugby sevens) where some good "all-rounders" in the traditional game have successfully transitioned to the smaller, faster, variant.

The obvious counterargument is that Team SUI is still Perret/Rios, of course, for whatever reason. They beat Hurlimann/Schwaller (both are good enough that they played in the 2 bubble slams recently), and beat them pretty handily 3-0 in a Best of 5 trials
http://www.curling-results.ch/resul...1/md/wm-trials/
SUI does have superteams like Paetz/Michel and Tirinzoni/Schwarz ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1P0Vi0-IjU ), but Perret/Rios still dominates them, from the look of it.

When USA plays JPN ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJspTN2xuTc ), that was 2 MFFFM teams playing against each other (males Joe Polo & Yuta Matsumura throw first & last stones).
JPN does switch it up for powerplay defense, but they're primarily an MFFFM team, which is rare these days.
Does anyone know if this was the first time 2 primarily MFFFM teams faced off against each other at the World Championship?
Chances are it's happened before, but if so, which teams and when?
//edit:
found this: 2014 WMDCC semifinal, HUN (Palancsa/Kiss) vs SWE (Johansson/Noréen)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=napMDZlUZTk
Same 2 teams rematch in the final of 2015:
https://youtu.be/t45_6dwDD0Q
2016 semifinal, USA (Peterson/Polo) vs RUS (Bryzgalova/Krushelnitskiy)
https://youtu.be/8ywjx-ZolT8
Any other examples?

AUS was up 4-3 vs SWE in 2019 semifinal.

I don't think they've ever played an entire tournament as well as they did since, but this team can definitely spark occasional brilliance and give even the best mixed doubles team a scare.

I think tourney openers tend to have more upset potential than playoff games anyway, but yes, CAN had to steal the win vs ESP.
That said, ESP actually has long been a staple of WMDCC.
Here's the final of 2018 Dutch Masters, between Otaegi/Unanue (Team Spain this year) and Garcia/Bottcher (the female of Team Spain that won world bronze in 2014, plus yes, that Bottcher).

There were plenty of big names at this event (world & Olympic medalists), so for 3 out of the 4 finalists to be from Spain is quite something.

After some mind boggling searching, seems Canada has beaten Italy 6 to 4. This appears to be a final. WTG Canada. Kerri and Brad are awesome.

What do you mind by mind-boggling searching? What trouble were you having?
You can actually watch the last few rocks of the 8th end. This video is hosted by WorldCurlingTV (WCF) YouTube channel.
