News From Toronto

A tip of the hat to Erika Brown and her rink of Allison Pottinger, Nicole Joraanstad and Natalie Nicholson who won the StuSells Women’s cash spiel at the venerable High Park Club. They went undefeated, winning the final over Ottawa’s Rhonda Varnes. The only thing wrong with the team was the lack of $ponsorship crests on their sweaters.

Three men’s rinks also came to Toronto; Craig Brown, John Shuster and Christopher Plys. None of the men won any Canadian dollars, but Shuster did meet Brown in the “B” Event of the modified Triple Knockout (John won).

Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen defeated Glenn Howard in the final.

Some of marquis matchups on the men’s side featured Olympic champion Brad Jacobs defeating former Olympic champion Brad Gushue in the second round, World Champ Niklas Edin of Sweden losing to Jacobs in the Quarter-Final and Howard defeating Jacobs in the Semi-Final.

I stated back in May team Brown had to be the favorites at the Nationals at that point and looked for an early wager. They have a win, a runner up and a semi-final in Canada already.

After watching the results of our HP teams in St. Paul and Brown in Toronto nothing has changed my mind. Christensen and her Junior women's team may be ranked #2 at this point in the year.

Obviously it is only October and there is a lot of time and team chemistry to gain by our HP squads before then. If that happens we could have a very competitive Nationals come February in Jacksonville (Florida).

congrats to Erika Brown's team for the great victory!

seems like a respectable weekend for Shuster. Went 3-3, did not make the playoffs, but two of those losses were against McEwen and Jacobs, the top two teams in the world.
