4 or 5 rock FGZ?
So, the WCF and Curling Canada are both implementing the five-rock free-guard zone, starting with the 2018-19 season. Is this expected to be adopted for league play in all curling clubs in Canada? Will your club be switching? Sorry if this has already been discussed.

Interesting question. Our club did not implement the new brush fabric rule, though of course the NSCA events all follow it. Thus, players in our club who also play in the NSCA events, use "legal" brooms even in recreational league play, while everyone else just uses what they've always used. The FGZ rule will have be more uniform, of course. I'd think in general clubs will adopt it, since at the the level of typical club curling games, it wouldn't make a lot of difference one way or the other. The same could be said about the brush fabric, but that's a good reason not to make everyone buy new brushes. The new FGZ rules don't cost any money to implement!

I asked Steve Chenier ED of the OCA about adopting the rule in club next season and he replied quote " We will be using the 5 Rock rule in competitions leading to a National Championship once approved/implemented by Curling Canada. I am not sure this rule should be enforced at the club level and will be starting a discussion among our members for review." end quote.
So likely most of our leagues will not adopt it yet. Almost like the year the 4 rock rule came in,

The 5 rock fgz is the rules of the game Oct 1, why wouldn't it be adopted at all levels? Just go with it. For club curlers it will scarcely make a difference to play by the same rules as everybody else.
The brush fabric standards are not in the rules of general play, and WCF guidance does not require compliance except for certain events. National curling assns have adopted the WCF guidelines for competition.

I hope our club adopts the rule, no use delaying the inevitable.

I'm trying to understand why a club would not adopt the 5 rock rule. What would be the rationale?

Well our club is mostly made up of social curling leagues. IMO the 5 rock rule is intended to get more rocks in play and is clearly directed at competitive curling. I am not opposed to the switch but I don't feel that it is needed in social curling leagues. Games will also take longer to play, and we struggle with this problem already. We will switch if that is what we should do, but reading the OCA response above, we are not being directed to do so in Ontario. Somewhat confusing.

I've scarcely seen a social league game where the 5-rock rule would have a significant impact. If the front was cleared by the second in a social league game, I would be shocked. Draw, draw, draw, come hell of high water.

There's no question that the rule is directed towards competitive curling. I think the impact on club curling is negligible. And I think it has virtually no impact on the length of a club game. If you support the concept of having consistent rules across all levels of play (as much as possible anyway), why not just adopt it at the club level - I really can't think of a good reason not to.
