Who is getting the vacant spot on the women's side with Muirhead winning the Players (already qualified via the Perth event two weeks ago)?

Sidorova was already qualified by winning the European Championship, but turned it down. Same for Feltscher (World championship), Brown (US championship), and Kim (Asia-Pacific championship), which is how Sweeting, Harrison, Muirhead, and Ogasawara made the field prior to the Players.

It's sunny and 22 in Edmonton area right now. I suppose I'll visit the event live, since I'm nearby, but think I'd rather be golfing. Not sure the season should go past the Masters golf and compete with NHL/NBA playoffs and warm weather.

My guess, after going through the WCT schedule, is Cotter (Tour Challenge Tier 2) if he hasn't already qualified and/or turned down the invite.

Champions Cup is for tournament winners, and should someone qualify in more than one spot (like Gushue in three or Koe in two), they will fill the spot with another tournament winner from the WCT. The prickly thing with this is that there is no listed pecking order of events from the circuit aside from the pre-determined list of auto-berths (national championships, worlds, grand slam events), which makes guessing who fills spots when a team wins multiple events difficult.

If we look through the winner's circle list on World Curling Tour, one would imagine the next teams in line for a Champions Cup spot would be John Shuster, Shaun Meachem and Josh Heidt. Jeff Hartung could be a long shot contender too. We know 1 spot is open for sure right now with Gushue winning the Players.
On the women's side, Un-Chi Gim and Casey Scheidegger should be next in line with Shannon Kleibrink having an outside shot as well if more teams turn down invites.

Looking at list of teams did anyone else hear that James Grattan was the extra team based on their win in Switzerland? Or did they decline?

I am interested to see who will fill the roster for this event and I like the idea of a championship of champions event. It seems VERY late in the season - so I guess that is a factor in teams turning down the event.
The players was always.. lately anyway... the season finale. Our sport is like hockey - picking away at summer fun - but at least it ends before May long.
Will there be streaming or the same old sportsnet? I am a rogers customer but could not get any of the streaming. I do get a run-around though. Am used to it.

They had been in a previous list for that win, but disappeared from it later on, so I am guessing they declined.

Note: In the event a team wins more than one qualifying event (e.g. a team wins the Masters and the National) or a team declines their invite, the winner of the next ranked World Curling Tour event based on strength of field will be invited to complete the 15-team lineup

So, they added Mick Lizmore, John Shuster & Shaun Meachem on the men's side and Allison Flaxey on the women's side. I mentioned somewhere that Fleury could lose her Canada Cup/Pre-Trials spot to McCarville, but Flaxey is closer so she could win the same spot. So, that's one thing to watch for next year.
Looking at the OOM, right now, look at Flaxey, McCarville & Ogasawara, a good performance could mean a invitation for the first slam in October.

I like this idea. Going down the list, and getting in by virtue of someone else declining does not belittle the fact that all teams in the event are champions of an event. That is a great achievement, and this Championship of Champions gives some lesser known champions an opportunity to show their stuff. Most are well known, but not all. These teams have what it takes to finish in the top money bracket. A very interesting commonality.

As I pointed out when I first saw her curl and call the game she has incredible demeanour for someone so young. The closest comparison was Homan when she was 16 and given chances to play top-level womens teams. Thankfully, while Fay is intense in her own way she's not wacked out intense like Rachel.
Her demeanour is a pleasure to watch. Lets see if she can shot-pelt opponents as well as Homan, Muirhead, Jones, etc.
She's basically a younger version of Krista McCarville! And I'd love to see Krista playing, too!
Agreed, I watched on YouTube when she lost the semi-final to the US. A good handshake, the whole team congratulated their opponents. After the final was done, who went to collect equipment left at the other end of the ice and remaining rocks (Canada ran the US out of rocks in the gold medal game)? The gold medal winning skip - Mary Fay. Nice to see someone so young have a good sense of sportsmanship.

Dr Elisabet Gustafson
Retired from curling at the age of 38 .. curled for over 17 years
not exactly an "early age"..
She still holds the title for most world Golds at 4..
Mary Fay is but 17 years old..nobody can crystal-ball guessing about
her curling career..
and how she may balance it with her personal goals..
