![]() Ottawa's Rachel Homan won 8-1 over Selena Sturmay of Edmonton in the Final of the Pumps and Pressure Red Deer Curling Classic. Homan with Tracy Fleury at third, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes on the front end scored two in the first end, then added two more points in the third end for a 4-1 lead. Add in a steal of four in the fourth end and it was all over with Sturmay conceding early. To advance to the championship game, Homan won 5-3 over Winnipeg's Lawes in the semifinals while Sturmay won 6-5 over Nancy Martin of Saskatoon. Against Lawes, after blanking the first end, Homan was held to a single point with hammer in the second end. Homan held Lawes to a single point in the fourth end to even the score, with Homan adding one point in the fifth end to take back the lead. Lawes jumped ahead in the sixth end scoring two points, though Homan re-took the lead with their own pair in the seventh end to lead 4-3 into the final end. Under pressure from Lawes, Homan stole the eighth end for the 5-3 win, in the only game of the weekend that was even close. Homan takes home the $10,000CDN first place cheque along with 45.000 WCF World Team Ranking points, while Sturmay receives $7,000CDN and 33.000 world ranking points for their second place finish. In the quarterfinals, Homan defeated Winnipeg's Beth Peterson 7-3, while Lawes defeated Skyler Ackerman of Saskatoon 7-4, Sturmay defeated Corryn Brown of Kamloops 7-1, and Martin defeated Calgary's Kayla Skrlik 6-5. Homan finished 3-0 in the 23-team qualifying triple knockout round. In their opening game, Homan defeated Amber Holland (Kronau, Sask) 9-1, then won 6-2 against Sturmay to advance to the A-Qualifier game where they 9-2 against Skrlik to advance to the playoff round. Homan next plays at the WFG Masters in Saskatoon in December as the Grand Slams return to Sportsnet. |
