By: Dylan Chenier Sweden's Team Edin has become the first rink to secure a spot in the playoffs at the 2022 IG Wealth Management Western Showdown in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, after defeating Ontario's John Epping 7-5 in an A-Side qualifier on Saturday afternoon. Edin's rink- being skipped once again this weekend by Oskar Eriksson- trailed early on in Saturday's draw, after allowing Epping to score one in the first end, and a steal one more in the second. The Swedes would finally get on the board in the third end with an impressive score of three points. A blank by Epping in the fourth gave Edin a 3-2 lead heading into the break. Coming back in five, the rink from Ontario would retake the lead with a deuce, putting them up 4-3. A score of one by Team Edin tied things up 4-4, however, Epping would inch ahead in the seventh with a score of one. Despite Epping keeping things close throughout the majority of the draw, Team Edin eventually put things away in the eighth with a score of three, taking the win 7-5. The squad now advances directly to Sunday night's quarterfinal draw. Saturday's game also marked the third consecutive victory for Team Edin, after the rink put up two wins to start the tournament on Friday. They will now play the waiting game throughout the rest of tonight and most of tomorrow, before meeting a yet-to-be-determined opponent in the quarterfinals on Sunday at 7:00 PM MT. Meanwhile, Team Epping now drops to the B-Side where they will play in another playoff qualifier tonight at 7:00 PM MT. The Ontario rink will face either Scott Manners or Ryan Kleiter.
